After hauling out cases of empty beer cans, and shot out big screen tv's, I've resolved to the fact that the gun community isn't full of upstanding citizens any longer.

It doesn't really matter where they came from, if they are out shooting, they are part of the gun community in the court of public opinion, rather we want them to be or not.

Very valid point. We're all lumped in together. Ive just seen posts about camping areas being trashed more lately too. Its not just shooters, its people. They don't care about anything other than themselves now. But its all moot when this stuff happens. That range wont be around for much longer, I think.

I hate to see reductions in public shooting land too, primarily because I hate to give anything to the leftist anti-gunners, but if irresponsible people are endangering responsible people ...

To be honest, the gun community like any other community (except maybe the Occupy Movement) is diverse and has a wide variety of people so it has never been FULL of upstanding citizens. I've seen plenty of irresponsible shooters (or at least the by-products of their actions like shot-up road signs) over the years. Most gun owners are responsible but there have always been a number of irresponsible Joe Six-Packs (literally ... I didn't know many guys who went pig hunting when I was growing up in Hawaii but those that I did know would be sure to take along plenty of beer and I'm reasonably certain they mixed their drinking and shooting).

This. Modern society has encouraged tons of people to think only of themselves (which is rather ironic given the collectivist bent of so much modern politics).
