Adding Utah

$100? Seems pricey for adding another state. What else do they teach that isn't covered in a Colorado course?

I'm not sure is specifically the content you're paying for by adding Utah. Utah has reciprocity with more/different states than Colorado, so you could carry in more locations. However, the trend seems to be moving towards states not honoring a CCW for a particular state if you are not a resident of said state. I declined to add the Utah or Florida to mine, it didn't add any states that I really thought I would drive through and need a CCW.

I am renewing my UT now. A good thing about UT's permit is that it is state issued. With CO, it is by county. So every county is different. If you've ever seen Elbert county's CCW permit it is a cheap laminated piece of paper. Run into a rookie cop and they might think its fake. I'm sure once they get in touch with someone but safe the hassle and get a UT permit also.

The Utah class has a very specific curriculum, as mandated by Utah law. I did a combined class through Profire that took a total of about 10 hours on a Sunday. The Utah permit is $65.50 initially, and just $10 for renewal in 5 years. You gain reciprocity in 5 additional states, as compared to your Colorado CCW. I did the Utah mostly because it is a state issued permit, and might be more readily recognized by LEOs in stated with Utah reciprocity.

You might want to check the current reciprosity laws. The Utah permit no longer offers you any more states than a CO permit does. As was already mentioned, many states are now not accepting ANY permits if the card holder is not a resident of the issuing state. More and more are going this way. New Mexico is in this debate right now with Utah permit holders. All I am saying is check the laws, as the benefits of having a Utah permit ( if you are not a Utah resident ) have pretty much gone by the way side.

As of this morning, Utah gets you the following states not covered by a Colorado permit: Washington, Minnesota, Ohio, and West Virginia

That is only true if you are a resident of Utah. Many states will not honor the Utah permit if you are not a resident of Utah. Out of the 32 states that list reciprocity with Utah, at least 5 of them will not honor the permit if you are not a resident. That only leaves 27 states, while Colorado has 28. As of right now, those states are Colorado, Michigan, South Carolina, Florida & New Hampshire. ( New Mexico may soon be the next ) There may be more as this appears to be the current trend. Some attorney general's websites are not listing this but if you give them a call they will tell you that they only honor the agreement if you are currenty a resident of the issuing state.
I know it is a pain in the butt to call every state, but literally these laws seem to be changing weekly and a phone call is the safer way to go. I hope this helps.
