Farming, teaching, and medical I would say were the biggest employers when I was there. Actually we lived in the same county as a Nuclear Power Plant and tons of people worked there as well.
That's what she emphasized, KS is great, especially where she is, but the area around Ft. Riley is not a good area. IIRC she lives north of Manhattan in some small town, but I'm not 100%. We'll probably go visit this year.

I like Nebraska from the time I've spent working there.

I remember road tripping to Manhattan with a buddy to visit his sister at KSU, it was actually much prettier than the western part of the state, with lots of green and rolling hills. Still doubt it's nice enough to get me to move there.

We were considering it until we saw the property taxes... and salaries don't make up for it.

I'll have to ask about the property taxes. Housing around Lincoln seemed like half as expensive as Denver. Even drinks in Lincoln were cheaper. Also, the city hasn't been ruined yet. Surprised the salary isn't there for you, especially with them calling themselves the silicon prairie and all.

That's my reservation. WY would be a great escape location for me (I'd want to live near Jackson's Hole) if it ever came down to it, but the wife doesn't want to live in a cold windy locale like WY. So KS would be the next option- but I'm still not sure I'd want to live that close to tornado alley. Cost of living in E. KS does seem appealing though- and it would have to be a large enough property to build a range, and own horses.

It could be depending on the company, but I know what the main IT company there pays its people, as I worked for them in Highlands Ranch.

Exactly. Not to mention their commerce is drying up left and right. A recent trip back to Scottsbluff revealed that even more businesses had closed up shop and there weren't that many to begin with. Scottsbluff is one of if not the most important business district of the panhandle of Nebraska so if they're struggling that's a poor sign, especially in an otherwise decent economy. Pretty sad.

Wyoming looking better and better every day.... didn't look like that when I was stationed there.

If the wife wants to move back to WY after we retire I won't fight her...but I'm sure it'll look different by the time that day comes
