Curious that this request is using the Colt Canada C-8 as its model for controls.

Between the ammunition and firearm spec requirements what I'm seeing is something where individual requirements can be met easily enough but the combination of requirements will make this a very difficult challenge. I can make a paper mache car, but it wouldn't hold up in the long run. Even if the challenge is met, it doesn't seem like something pleasant for operator use and (as already stated) with the boundary pushing here the firearms themselves will take a serious beating and wear out quickly. I'm almost surprised this didn't have the added requirement to ensure all components used at least 80% post-recyclable products.

Not sure this unicorn is the right way to go, but when has that ever stopped things?!

Ummm...AR-10 in .260 Remington, anyone? Why must they always try to reinvent the wheel with these things?

Because they get to play with other people's money.

Setting impossible targets usually leads to inovation and may bring the best rifle and cartridge in history...

When you weigh the quantity of innovation vs. the outright failure of these exercises, innovations are in the tiny minority. It's also possible to innovate just because something is a good idea that can be marketed. No crazy government request required. Just look at Ronnie Barrett's successes as an example.

Or, it leads to a black hole of wasted government(taxpayer, us)money, and allocation of resources that might be better utilized in other fields...
