    Default Torture test rifle

I was at the range today and 4 young men showed up with M4 style rifles. One guy put a 100 round drum magazine in a really nice looking rifle and let her rip. 100 rounds as fast as he could pull the trigger. Smoke was coming of the barrel and it looked like heat waves coming off as well. Then another guy loaded the drum and did it again in the same rifle. Maybe 15 minutes between bursts.
My question is : As hot as that barrel was wouldn't it permanently damage that rifle?

Depends on the barrel, but it wasn't *good* for the barrel.

More than anything, it was a waste of ammo.

It's not a waste if that's what you enjoy.

Some people buy new Corvettes to drive from stop light to stop light. I call that a waste, but if ypu have the money and that's what you enjoy...

That's a subjective opinion on your part, concerning the ammo.

Just because you don't condone that rate and style of fire, doesn't make it a waste.

    Perhaps they had a purpose.

Or perhaps they were just loudmouth punks blowing off steam (and money).

Some people prefer proficiency, and some just like the BOOM.

I will add, that if I'm going to blow through ammo at that right of fire, you can probably be assured it's 22LR...

And I'm very happy that that is economically and logistically feasible again.

    That is all.

Been there, done that a few times, but it was actual torture tests, twice for a manufacturer. And I dunked them in a tube of ice-water afterwards.

The subject barrel was shooting 5/8" at 100 yards new and after 2 months and 9700 rounds of abuse, including a few 90 rounds in under a minute followed by ice water, was shooting 5/8" groups at 100 yards when I returned it to the manufacturer. The control barrel started out at 1 MOA and went to 5 MOA after 8K rounds.

Sounds like a quality barrel! Nitride? Chrome lined?
I think it would be interesting to conduct that experiment with one barrel getting ice water and the other not.

Nitrided Stretch16. The control was the same profile and gas port, but a chrome moly barrel.
