Thanks, I've used this method for awhile and puck + files has been how I've kept a great edge on my Estwing Fireside Friend (I love this dumb thing, my girlfriend always makes fun of me for bringing it out with the firewood whether I need it or not). I think there are a couple of problems with this one: 1) The edge had a weird profile on it from the start. 2) There were plenty of little chips/nicks on the cutting edge I had to take care of. 3) This steel is definitely better than most of the axes I'm used to, which is why it'll be a great axe once I get this dumb thing all squared away.

Also, I generally just keep my old tools of this type oiled, but I know when I got this thing it had remnants of red paint on it. The head has pitting, so it's never going to look new, but I'm thinking of repainting it if I can find the specs for what the original paint was.

Try a belt sander. Even a hand held one in a vice. If you cant get sorted, PM me and you can use my belt grinder. I like axes too.

I've been tortured in Colorado by a lack of space and tools (as a renter). I might take you up on the offer if you're cool with that. I've never used a belt grinder on an axe so any pointers/help would be appreciated, and obviously let me know some beers you enjoy.
