Potentially, but as mentioned you will lose your HD video quality. It is taking the HDMI signal and splitting it up into a video and audio analog. The analog video does not have the capability to pass HD signals. The receiver is too old to handle todays video signals.

I guess I'll contact the guy I bought the receiver from and see what he says tomorrow.

Audio and video both flow on HDMI. When you plug into the converter, you will end up without HD for the output. If you notice in the description, it supports HD input, not output.

There is no HDMI out on any television. HDMI ports on the back of televisions are always inputs. So that is not a workable solution.

The receiver you bought is a 2 channel, you won't get surround out of it anyway. Notice that you only have left and right output, no front and rear.

Personally, I would just get the optical (toslink) to analog converter, install it on the TV output and be able to hear all of your TV sound in stereo. This way, you preserve your HD since you aren't touching the video input.

If you run it off your computer anyway, why don't you just run the sound from the laptop to the receiver? You probably can't do that, but thought I'd suggest it just in case.

it's in a different room. and wouldnt work anyways due to the media server software running through the PS3. It's hosted on my computer but streamed via wireless to the PS3. so the PS3 controls it via the host computer.

You can use this from the digital out of your TV to any of the receiver's inputs.
I recommend using Video One input. This box comes with the optical digital cable that goes from the TV to this converter, but not the red and white stereo RCA cables that would go from the converter to the receiver.
As was said before, this will give you louder and better sound, but not real surround sound.
