I remember once talking with a Denver Sheriff's Deputy about this issue. He said he didn't know anyone who would be willing to execute confiscation for several reasons:
1) It's unconstitutional
2) It's logistically impossible
3) It's asking for a large amount of firefights, e.g., "If some dude has a bunch of guns, I'm going to assume he knows how to use them."
