    Default post storm scammers

We're talking about the nasty hail storm from yesterday in another thread, figured this deserved a new one. Today, day after the storm, I've had no less than 10 scammers show up at my door. "Hello there, I've been working with your neighbor _______, you share a fence with them. Can I offer you ______?" Do these people just go from place to place following storms like this? Someone has to be falling for their crap or they wouldn't be doing this. I don't have a real rant to go on here but it's really starting to annoy the shit out of me. Not only does everyone have to deal with damage, insurance and all the other crap but now it's these shitbags running around knocking on your door. I almost told this last guy that I gave the last of my meth to the previous scammer.

dang! I just realized I should offer them cash to cut down that damn cottonwood tree that's been annoying me. Now I hope at least one more shows up.

They aren't necessarily scammers, that's just how they get clients. I wouldn't recommend them, and a lot of them do have shady business practices, and the guys they pay to knock on doors usually can't get other jobs for a reason, but they are probably a real company. A real company that was hastily created and will disolve and leave town once the money dries up, but a real company nonetheless.

On a side note, one of my good friends owns a roofing company (they also can do siding and gutters), and has been continuously licensed in Colorado for more than 20 years. He's very competitively priced, guarantees his work, and is very experienced dealing with insurance companies. He did my dad's roof a few years back, after the not-a-tornado hit central Lakewood. PM me for referral info.

Some of these guys seem legit, some are pure and obvious scammers. I'm working with your neighbor INSERT MADE UP NAME HERE who you share a fence with. I know everyone around me by name, they're just making things up. Either way we have to wait for insurance to say if they're doing anything or not.... I think.

I don't want to give the wrong impression here. Your impression of those guys being skeevey dirt bags is correct. I've heard of guys getting people to sign contracts with a "cancellation fee" that is 50% the cost of their estimate. They say things like, I need you to sign this saying you give me permission to climb onto your roof for an inspection.

Show up to the door with your favorite AR hanging from a sling.

Your reputation will keep the scammers away.

While we're throwing out recommendations, I have a buddy that specializes in repairs. Most contractors want the whole roof and will either pressure you to replace, or just blow you off for a repair.
