Default New Zealand bans semi-auto rifles after mass shooting

New Zealand Bans Guns After Mass Shooting; All "Military-Style" And "Assault Rifles" Outlawed

    https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2019-...assault-rifles

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced the "first tranche" to reforms on gun laws - beginning with the immediate ban on the sale of semi-automatic and 'assault' rifles, six days after attacks on two mosques in Christchurch left 50 people dead. Notably, accused gunman Brenton Tarrant - specifically hoped his attack would lead to the restriction of gun rights.

"On 15 March, our history changed forever. Now, our laws will too," said Ardern. "We are announcing action today on behalf of all New Zealanders to strengthen our gun laws and make our country a safer place."

"The effect of this will mean that no one will be able to buy these weapons without a permit to procure from the police. I can assure people that there is no point in applying for such a permit," she said, adding "In short, every semi-automatic weapon used in the terrorist attack on Friday will be banned in this country."

What a dick move to have a permit system, and immediately admit that no one should bother.

It's scary that a gov't can do something like that with no legislative process.

I get pissed that the DMV is allowed to put up signs saying how they charge more to use a credit card than cash (against state law and the credit card processing agreement) without any penalty. This is a few levels worse.

I bet they will even add more to the ban as they write the legislation.

I’m afraid we are heading the same path.

Evidently the legislation has already been drafted and passed.

This morning NPR noted that the new law went into effect immediately as a deliberate attempt to prevent people from panic buying guns and mags before the institution of the new law.

If there's nothing wrong with having to show an ID to buy a gun, there's nothing wrong with having to show an ID to vote.

For legal reasons, that's a joke.

As the people interviewed in the streets of Christchurch, New Zealand, report,
"We are not like the United States. There is no constitutional right to own firearms."
Wonder why the founders of the US thought it might be necessary in the US? To protect US citizens from a government that tries to take away their rights.

That's true of course, but more, that in the USA there's a rifle behind every blade of grass. It's fundamental to our national defense. But as western democracies disarm their citizens the totalitarian dictatorships are preparing their youth for war. Does anyone have a doubt where this is headed?
