Default Did i read this , on yahoo of all places?

I do not believe in reparation, because what reparation does, it points to a certain race, a certain color, as evil, and it points to another race, my race, as one that has not only become racist, but also beggars.?
During a portion of his allotted five minutes, Owens took the discussion in specific political directions. ?I used to be a Democrat until I did my history and found the misery that party brought to my race ... Let's pay restitution. How about the Democratic Party pay for all the misery brought to my race??
Owens continued, ?And every white American, Republican or Democrat, who feels guilty because of the color of their skin, you can pony up also. Then we can get past reparations and recognize this country has given us greatness

So why have other former slave populations flourished, while blacks do not?

    How would reparations be calculated?

Surely being a decendant of slaves brought to the US is a mucher better life than what would have happened if those slaves remained slaves in their native lands. The US slave decendants should be praising those who brought their ancestors here instead of seeking handouts.

The Civil War was fought and many people of many races gave their lives to resolve the issue of slavery. Why is it that we're still talking about slavery being the cause of shortcomings of any race in this country?

I see foreign immigrants come here with nothing (not even the ability to speak English), apply themselves, work hard, and succeed at grasping the American Dream. We've already gone down the path of 'Affirmative Action' and thrown the idea of equal opportunity on its ear. When can we end the excuses?

Ehhh, I don't know that I'd phrase it exactly like that. One could easily make the argument that all the industrial tech created during WWII ultimately made the world a better place afterward, but I doubt many people would run around praising Hitler for his actions.

I think the point is that this country didn't invent slavery. They may have taken advantage of it, but they didn't start (or finish) it.

Another example is to look at the shit hole that is Liberia.

I fully support some financial compensation for anyone who was actually a slave before/during the Civil War and is currently alive.

Per bolded, I'd qualify, "[statistically] do not [now]." Those who overcome a culturally ingrained mindset of failure do flourish.

But it's not just blacks, it's also anyone from a low income, low hope culture; typically they experience a cyclical devolution into practical barbarism.

I'm white, and my dad grew up rather poor. His uncles were very much of the "you think you're better than us cus you went to college, boy?" mentality. Any movement up was effectively treason, and smacked of yankee influence. What I've seen from blacks of a similar mindset is the treason is seen not as to one's culture and socioeconomic status simply, but race; not due to yankee influence, but for trying to "act white" (whatever that means).

The key is to change the culture, which cannot be accomplished with mere financial restitution for real or imagined slights, which men like Mr. Burgess seem to be pointing at. Dr. Thomas Sowell often seems to as well. It can only be accomplished with stoking the fires of hope in every mind and heart to simply be better. The black community which would seemingly benefit from such reparations doesn't need money. They need hope. But hope is exactly the currency which is not being argued for. It can't be, because then the "victims" would understand plainly how much their continued status of being "held down" empowers their "heroes". The agitators for this need to be needed. And that's the last thing they will be if every black, hispanic, asian, native american, etc., person realizes they have the power to better themselves and stop blaming others for their socioeconomic status. That realization is priceless, and cannot be placed in a bank account or on an EBT card.

Well said. What needs to happen at the same time though, is for non-blacks to realize that this change is happening at the same time and be welcoming of that change. It's not required that this happens, but it sure would help grease the wheels of change. Part of what makes this topic so challenging.

Heh, I remember...I think it was late 90's, the last civil war widow died. Apparently she married some civil war vet when he was like 80-90 and she was a teen, he died and she herself lived till 90ish as well.
