We howled outside tonight...we were already enjoying a toasty fire and a cold one, so we joined in. Good harmless fun that is uplifting to someone...

I asked my husband to participate. Hes kind of like a kiddo in that way & thought he would enjoy being loud since hes been stuck home with me. Boy, I was right. Giggle.

Then he came back in & asked wtf was that for anyway?

I got moved to nights for my work schedule during the shutdown, now the neighbors wake me up an hour earlier than my alarm every night.

First thing that came to mind. People that don't work shift work or fucked up hours don't even think about it, but the very people they are howling for, are the same people just trying to squeeze out an extra hour of sleep SOMEWHERE in their day/night. But alas, shift work has caused me to hate loud stereos and exhaust systems to, I'm now a grumpy old man I guess.

Feel lucky they're not doing it at an actual first responder typical shift change @7PM.

At least that's what my ex-Paramedic wife told me. Same one that's a Nurse and thinks what they are doing is dumb. But hey, if it makes you feel good.

I am not howling, nor have I heard any by people in this area either.

Often though, one can hear the real thing usually after midnight and before sunrise.

To me, it's partly just more virtue signalling with little substance. Just another stupid tide pod challenge.

However, if people need to do something to make them feel better and show appreciation, go for it. Don't expect everyone to join in, and don't assume that nonconformists are not appreciative.
A thought just occurred, not directly related, but...

What superstitions were to the greatest generation and older - that's been wholly replaced by virtue signaling today. There's few, if any superstitions that are broadly kept now, but if you don't participate in virtue signaling, you receive the same kind of scornful looks and shaking heads as if you walked under a ladder outside a restaurant in 1935. For both, there's a few people that never participate in any of it, and there's a few people that feel obligated to participate in all of it, practically getting a chip on their shoulder for "saving someone's life today", and then a lot of people in between.
