    Default S&W M&P15 Sport 2

Hello, I?m new to this group and new to firearms. I just recently bought a M&P15 sport 2, and I?m looking at getting a free float hand guard, I?m trying to figure out which one would be best for me? I recently ordered a (Knights amrmament RAS 98064) but not they?re saying it?s on back order for a few months. So I started searching around and came across Midwest industries and started looking at their free float guards, like I said I?m new to this stuff so I?m not sure what brands are the best and what brands to stay away from. Also can a A2 post be removed without doing anything to the gas block? Thanks for the help

Midwest is decent and won’t break the bank. If you up the ante Giessele is hard to beat. KAC is good stuff but I honestly think it is overpriced.
A couple of different ways to deal with the front sight issue-
A- get a short forearm so the existing front sight base can be used.
B- if you go with a longer forearm then you must either replace the factory front sight base with one that will fit under the forearm or have the existing FSB “bobbed”. Of those 2 choices I prefer to bob the existing FSB, done properly it is clean and you will not have to worry about it ever loosening or shifting.
Give the crew at Bowers a holler, they will get you fixed up

    Chop it or swap it.

I have dealt with a couple of them before.
Regardless of what forearm you choose if it is a true “free float” then the FSB must be removed to swap out the barrel nut (which will be supplied with your forearm, they are proprietary).
Now removing the factory FSB will range from “wasn’t bad, took me about 10 minutes” to “OMFG this Mother&$@# is never going to come off!”
    YMMV
The biggest issue is removing the pins that hold the FSB in place, they are typically tapered can present some challenges. The common mistakes I have seen-
Trying to drive them out the wrong direction.
Trying to just “tap” them out with a small hammer and punch. The bastards are tight and take a serious punch and a sharp, dedicated blast from a 16oz or better ballpeen hammer.

That’s why I said to go see the Bowers boys, they can help with your selection and have competent folks who will install it for you at a reasonable cost with the correct tools so nothing gets damaged.
After it is removed I use a cutoff wheel to cut the sight tower off and then reprofile and re parkerize it.
