They're not removing history. He's still in the history books as the leader of an army that marched against the United States. They're just removing the statue of him in front of a government building.

Through the distillation and twisting/interpretation of history by those that didn't actually experience it, your conclusion is that there was no reason for the statues to have ever been built.
