Yes it is possible, all you would need is a conversion barrel like the one below.

I think you would need 9mm magazines as well. I know they're needed to convert a SIG because the feed lips for .40/.357SIG are too wide to hold 9mm cartridges.

You don't "need" mags. The 40 mags will work but if you plan on carrying with 9mm definitely get 9mm mags. Otherwise, if it's at the range, just rock it. You will probably get a double feed or two every once in a while though.

To convert from 40 over to 9mm you would need a new slide as well. The breach face and extractor on a 40 isn't the same for a 9mm. Usually manufactures offer caliber swaps by changing only the barrel on 40 caliber pistols to switch over to 357 SIG because the base of the brass is the same diamter. 357 SIG also uses the same magazines as 40 caliber. So if you want a drop in barrel swap you are pretty much stuck with only using 357 SIG.

To swap a 40 caliber over to 9mm, you would need a 9mm Slide, Barrel and magazines. Since we are talking about an XD, why not just buy a whole new 9mm XD for $450 and be done with it?

You don't need the slide. Just the barrel and mags. The extractor and everything else is slightly different but will work just fine. I have had no misfeeds with my conversion and have shot over 300 rounds through it.

Have fun with the conversion. I am not sure 300 rounds of error free feeding would be considered a valid qualification that it works or not. But to each their own.

Think of it this way. If Springfield thought that a 40 slide would work reliably with 9mm ammo then why would they make two different slides???

Just because something "works" in a limited test does not mean that its setup correctly.

I am sure that if I ran across the highway blind folded I could make it without getting hit most of the time. But being able to do it does not make it the right way to cross a street.
