Wow !!

Just thought I'd share any interesting project we've had going at my church for just over a year. We pick up soon to expire bakery,dairy,and produce at the Whole Foods at 92nd and Sheridan 2 times a week. We then take it to the Arvada Food Bank where they weigh each donation. The church tallied up the weight receipts this week and we had picked up just over 20,000 lbs. in 2010 !!!!
Can you imagine if every food outlet and restaurant across the country participated in such a program either through a church or food bank ? I can only imagine what a huge dent this would make in feeding homeless or needy families in this country. The food bank says that they do have regular pickups at King Soopers and a few others that choose to participate but I still have to think that there could be a lot more effort to this cause.
I'm surprised somewhat that the powers that be haven't stepped in because it's not government controlled !

If the government had run this program, they would have collected 40,000 lbs. in 2010. This program would have cost the taxpayers 10 million dollars in administrative costs and several million dollars in salary and benfits for government employees. It would have produced several volumes of policy and regulations which would have so discouraged the grocery stores that in 2011, these same grocery stores would just toss the excess into the garbage just to be rid of the government nuisance. By 2013, your church would again pick up the ball and do the good work which you are currently obedient to perform with joy and in response to the greatest gift you have already received.

No government can bring morality to a task without accepting morality from it's source. Government itself is amoral. Any morality you experience in dealing with government stems from the morality individual government employees may bring with them to their service. Be grateful because morality and compassion in government service is discouraged.

And that's why the government shouldn't be in health care, education, research/development, and a host of other commercial enterprises.

That is a really good hearted thing you are doing, that is awesome. My wife and I tried to do that down here with the Wal-marts and City Markets, but both companies, well GM's told us that they could not do that and that everything that they had left at the end of the day has to be thrown in the dumpster. They don't want to risk a law suit for spoiled foods. Nothing that we threw out made either of them change their minds.

I work for the coalition for the homeless and some days we get food donations or clothing and i distribute it to people cause most will take more then they need and it spoiles, I deal with homeless people all day and most are grateful for anything we can do to help get them back on there feet, some just want to get stuff for free for as long as they can.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm in no way alone in this effort. I belong to a small church that believes we're here to serve the least of us. I'm not going on a religious rant here but by no means am I doing this alone.
There's a DVD documentary out called "Dive" by Jeremy Seifert that boggles your mind with the food waste in this country. If we simply salvaged the throw
away food there would be no food problem in this country.
Any of you like Spyder that are trying to do something like this please feel free to pm me and I'll try and get you any info I can.
We can all make a difference if we look beyond ourselves.
