As nice as the fast movers are, with the accuracy of their precision guided munitions, I MUCH prefer the "ugly" slow-moving A-10. To me, having a pair of them overhead is a beautiful sight.

+1. I grew up in southern AZ and got to watch them all the time fly overhead. And the sound of the cannon is one of the coolest (and scariest) sounds in the world.

I quoted yours because in NC we used to have AC-130s fly over allot.

Puff was the Nickname given the AC-130 during Viet-Nam

The AC-130 gunship has a combat history dating to Vietnam where it was humorously known as "Puff the Magic Dragon." Gunships destroyed more than 10,000 trucks and were credited with many crucial close air support missions. During Operation Urgent Fury in Grenada in 1983, AC-130s suppressed enemy air defense systems and attacked ground forces enabling the successful assault of the Point Salines Airfield via airdrop and air land of friendly forces. The AC130 aircrew earned the Lt. Gen. William H. Tunner Award for the mission.

I must say I am going to miss the gun ships going off at night out here. There's nothing more comforting than hearing that howitzer turn someone into red ramadan jelly. And seeing the flash is pretty sweet from down here too!
