    I thought about the phone thing, but I really don't like that idea for use as a GPS unit

    i wouldnt consider the phone, it only works with service, but if you have service its super good, with current google maps

    My thoughts as well. I also want something durable for backpacking, camping, etc.

    A GPS is a good, useful tool, but I would be wary of relying on one in a survival situation, as the .gov controls the system, and can screw with it in a number of different ways. That being said, they are great for backpacking or motorsports. My best luck has been craigslist or ebay, but sometimes you can find deals locally.

    I am very confident with a map and compass. Just looking for a quality system for backpacking, but not my failsafe, and curious what systems people like

    Check out the Garmin Rino 530 HCx. I haven't been able to drum up the funds for one yet, but from what I understand, they are extremely bad ass. And if you aren't into the walkie talkie thing, check out the GPSMAP 60CSx. I know a few guys that have them and they all say they are the greatest thing since the Paris Hilton sex tape.
