"So I start the MEPS process tonight with my ASVAB". From reading the posts in this thread, I guess these abbreviations have to do with the Military. Some of us MUCH older guys have no idea what the hell MEPS and ASVAB is. Care to help me understand, please.

ASVAB: Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery. The test you take before entering the military.

MEPS: Military Entrance Processing Station. Where you go to get your physical, draw your contract, and swear in to the military.

Many thanks for the explanation. I went through both of them exactly 56 years and two weeks ago today (June 9, 1955). Wow, that makes me a REALLY old bastard.

Just a quick little thing, I take it you have a degree? If you go enlisted you can enter as an E4 (trust me it helps, privates ain't worth diddly). Or did you ever think of maybe doing being commissioned as an officer? True you won't get to actually PICK your job, but the pay, treatment, and responsibility (from the outside looking in as I was enlisted) sure is better. But man, good for you on intel/crypto. I was 35F (most boring intel job there is- should have gone HUMINT Collection [HCT]), all my buddies who went Crypto were smart as shiznit and had like 16-18month AIT with minimum 6 year active service obligation. Some of the best and brightest our country has to offer, good luck brother!
Just a side note, I just got paperwork from my IRR reserve unit saying they need some info from me to determine my medical retention ability- basically saying I'll get a 100% full and free discharge from my 3 years and some change obligation to IRR. I weigh this as good and bad, but it does hurt if SHTF in my life and I choose to go back to service they'll tell me thanks but I can't. So gotta make appointments and get the packet sent back and see if they send me my discharge.

Well AMEN brother, thanks for doing your part! You're never too old to serve your country, I was just wondering what made you do it now - but I'm glad you are .

Fortunately you just barely meet the requirements for a commission if you go that route, as long as you can do 20 then they'll let you go for your bars. At least that's how it was when I was in.
