Let's say they banned guns and the law said to turn your's in...its the law, right? Must obey. Put aside constitutional concerns for a moment - the next dem president packs the supreme court with his cronies and the latest jurisprudence on the 2nd amendment is reversed.

I know a lot of people here would disobey such a law and mysteriously "lose" their offending weapons or have sold them in private sales years before the law was passed. I don't blame them. To simply shout that the law is the law and has to be obeyed - without any look into whether its a just or reasonable law - is the height of unthinking idiocy.

To try to end the discussion with "its the law, so there," is basically an appeal to authority - the appeal that the government's laws are without flaw and the ultimate moral authority. I don't adhere to either belief, and I certainly wouldn't associate with anyone who does.

Current immigration laws are holdovers from a frankly racist past (before you whine about the race card, the original immigration restrictions, passed specifically to keep the racial makeup of the United States relatively stable, so go bitch somewhere else) and Marxist economics (where more people = less pie to go around.) Add in a healthy bit of fear of other cultures that is a recurring cycle in America and you have the right mix for the immigration restrictions we've had going for a while now.

These laws are absurd, on the level of laws outlawing guns, and I'm not sorry that I'm not at all excited that the law is being broken.

I also wouldn't rat you out if you kept your guns after they were made illegal. Go figure, I don't just salute the law and obey.

The main thing here is not "the law is the law and we must obey," otherwise police wouldn't be permitted to use discretion as to weather or not to cite or arrest people for certain violations. But there are some laws that MUST be enforced, and immigration is one of them. The #1 way the US Dept. of Homeland Security states terrorists and other criminals make it into America is via illegal immigration thru the porous border between the US and Mexico. I'm not saying all laws are right, I'm stating that there are laws out there that DEMAND enforcement more than others... Alabama has a law on it's books still that states you cannot transport liquor across county lines, that shouldn't be enforced or punished nearly as much as Murder or grand larceny.

Sorry to get everyone's panties in a twist over where I google some basic info from. Was just trying to point out some of the potential penalties and standing laws for those of us with a less than thorough knowledge of the subject.

And as far as Pancho's last post, right when you said put aside constitutional concerns for a moment is where you veered into la-la land. I may not agree with certain laws but that doesn't mean I'll go break them as a form of protest. You can't just put aside the constitution and say one thing is equal to the other, they aren't. One is an inalienable right, the other is a group of people thinking they are entitled to something because they've curtailed the system for a while.
