I think they should lose their salary, but not as a source of actually making a difference in the budget. It's a rounding error. They're cutting the James Webb telescope (the successor to Hubble) for budget reasons. That's like worrying about the scraped knuckle when you've lost several other limbs.

It's all in Defense, SocSec, Medicare, and Debt interest. Anything else is just rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.

If they'd started ten years ago they could have done an orderly draw down in the military, retired people early, made decisions on weapons procurement earlier. Instead it's going to be government standard hack jobs.

You also can't forget that some of our infrastructure is crumbling away too. Bridges that are supposed to last no more than 50 years are nearing their 40-something birthday, power lines put up years ago are falling apart, levies not made to standard are at risk (Katrina anyone?), and lets not forget water delivery pipes and sewage pipes are eroding. These are all things that over the next 5-10 years we can invest in so they are fixed, but if left to break down it could be 3x more expensive.

I definitely don't care about the NFL but if the college season were to get cancelled for some reason then I'd be calling my congressman.

The trivial shit that people get wrapped up in just blows my mind. Everyone should cancel cable for a month so they can get grounded again.
