I was raised in a home where guns were a non-issue. Not good, not bad, but also not educated about them. When I became an adult I thought it would be a nice hobby so I got into it. I can say after a few years now, from a firsthand experience of knowing nothing about firearms except from movies and the media, the most dangerous thing about guns is people's pre-conceived notions regarding them. I say teach your kids, teach your family's kids, teach anyone willing to listen.

Hollyweird has done such a disservice to firearms.
In my house growing firearms were also a non issue, there were firearms around so whats the issue?
Another +1 on educating childeren on firearms.
Kids will be kids and do stupid things but if a child is taught early regarding firearm handling and safety I feel that it really kills alot of curiosity they may have.
Curiosity killed the cat, and unfortunately it kills kids too.
When both of my boys were ankle biters and we started shooting one of the first things I had them shoot was old melons. Punching paper and even tin cans I dont think a child fully grasps the concept of what a firearm is capable of.
Let them explode a couple of melons and they get it and realize the consequences of pulling a trigger.

As far as the article-good for the PD, screw the councilwoman and the other is a community organizer, just as our vacationing prez used to be.

In middle school (not in Cali) I remember being on a field trip and getting a turn in one of those simulators where you have the projected movie and have to react to a random situation. I'd argue that was a potentially more intense experience because I was put in a position to take someone down. Everyone on the trip had a go at it. Nobody actually died and no parents had a problem with it. It was just another thing I did with a fairly neutral effect.
