It's a snap, I did it for a couple years after highschool. A mid level head unit, 5 channel amp, sub, and some replacement speakers will go a looooong way.

Most of our customers weren't extremely pleased by just replacing the head unit and door speakers so quite a few of them would throw the cash down for an amp and sub - then it was night and day.

I like trunk space. The amp I think I could do, as it can be put up on the side, but really Im not a sub person. So who wants to help me put it in when I get stuff? And help me pick stuff out.

You don't really have to throw a huge box with 15" subs back there. Most folks associate subs with a thugged out '82 cutlass that sounds like it's gonna shake the bumper off but a nice 10" in a small enclosure wont take up much room at all and will make it sound closer to your Bose system. The Bose mini systems wouldn't be very impressive at all if it weren't for a sub.

A small amp, good set of components, and a good HU. You can have something nice that will sound awesome for around a few hundred, no more than $500

Heh. I dropped by there once. Picked out a basic model at $150 to replace the broken OEM. When they were done adding charges for this connector and that connector and labor, they quoted me $650. See ya.

If you're looking for high end sound quality be prepared to break out the checkbook. Been a few years but stick to Eclipse, Nakamichi, McIntosh and Denon. Keep in mind high end units generally do not have built in amplifiers so you'll need to invest in good wires and at least one amplifier.

If you're just looking for better then stock save yourself a grand a pick up an alpine and concentrate on upgrading your speakers.
