having looked through both gen 1 and gen 3 tubes, i can say that i see where the money goes. i don't have that kind of cash to spend, but it is well spent. gen 3 blows gen 1 to the moon. ive never seen gen 2 and am kind of interested how it is since its a third the cost of gen 3. gen 1 would be ok for walking outside when camping or something along those lines, but it blurs, majorly fisheye's, and has a very short distance. i could walk around with gen 3's all night long. you can see basically as far as normal vision and it is often very crisp and clear. i wish i had pure cash lying around id love to buy some, or some phosphorus ones.

im not saying don't go with gen 1. if you really want some basic night vision go for it. but be aware of what you are buying. im not sure you will be happy if your drop 400 bones, you might be pissed and often gen 1 is hard to resell. it would be a huge benefit to try some different models out to see if its worth the cost, i just don't know where you could do that.

Its not for hunting, but I would like 1000 foot distance, whats out there type thing. But for 250 a Russian Job might do the trick. Gen 3,aint gonna happen, unless its surplus but even then it would be over $1500.00. Russia has lots of good cheap stuff, I saw a gieger counter for like $60.00 working.

300 yards ain't happening with a gen 1 or any sub $1-2K unit. Go here read Victors info and rethink NV

Jerry, do you have a source for those Russian surplus ones?
Here is a link to the thread that I started with. It has other links to follow. http://forums.gunboards.com/showthre...631-Nspu-1pn34

unfortunately jim is right. even if you could technically see that far it wouldn't be at all clear. i agree its a bummer because ive always been fascinated with night vision and wanted some myself, but from what i have seen and read you need to spend at least $1000 to get anything even remotely useable. i admit i don't know everything so there may be options i am not aware of, but a lot of those russian ones are very, very basic level from the 1980's. generation 1 of most of the major producers today will be better than those.e,

i think your best bet if you want a decent pair is to try to save to about $1500. in that range you can buy decent brand new ones and very good used ones. people sell them all the time on calguns, m4carbine, snipershide, etc. often times a $3000 unit will fetch around $1500, especially in an economic climate like this. people need to sell stuff and sell it fast.

I have a Gen2+ D300 Milspec monocular that I got used for $1k. It works almost as well as the PVS-14s I was issued before. Haven't done a proper side by side comparison, but they work pretty well. They use the same J-arm and other mount equipment as PVS-14s do.

Beats dropping $3k on PVS-14s that I'm hardly ever going to use anyways. Don't think I'd want to go cheaper though.
