AR-15 Pistol?

So I am highly thinking of a AR SBR. Can i just buy an upper 7" and register my current Ar-15 lower as an SBR and switch between the 16" and 7" when i feel like it? Will there be the same problems as a kit build as BP stated? Any recomentations for an upper 7" or a complete AR SBR? looking at a 7" or 10" upper from Rock River. Which one is shall we say more "fun".

I like my DPMS "KittyKat" 7.5" upper, and it runs flawlessly for me in both semi and full auto.
