    Default Fly Fishing

Spinoff of another thread. Play nice!

Started about '97. Had a neighbor that was way into it. Started with a base model Cortland set-up.

My tastes run toward retro gear.

First up is a '50s vintage Allcocks Aristocrat #A330 9' bamboo rod. Bought it from another forum member. Interesting history and in perfect condition. The real is a Pflueger Sal-Trout.

My Small river rod is an early '60s, fiberglass, 6 1/2', Wright & McGill Feather Light. The reel is a Martin #63.

Getting a new cork and seat.

A few reels pre and post cleaning. Most are from the '60s.

    Bronson Royal-360
    Pflueger Sal-Trout.

Japanese knock off of an Ocean City.
    Ocean City #36.
    Pflueger Progress #1774

    Enjoy.

    My rods and reels.
First Pic from top to bottom:
St Croix series IV 7'8" 3 weight with a Galvin reel
St Croix series V 9' 5 weight with a Ross Evolution reel
St Croix series IV 8'6" 6 weight with a Ross Gunnison reel
St Croix series III 7'6" 6 weight with a Ross Flyweight reel
I built all of these rods. The 5 weight has titanium hardware and eyes and brown metallic thread, and burl cork. The shorter 6 weight is my daughters and is about as perfect a weight and length for kids as I've ever seen.

Second pic from top to bottom:
ADC 9' 6 weight with a Ross reel
    Orvis T3 8'6" 5 weight with a Lamson reel
Orvis (forget the model) 9' 4 weight with a Galvin reel
Three Forks River 8'6" 3 weight with a Ross Evolution reel
I use the T3 to teach newbies with. The TFR 3 weight is what I fish with the most. It's just too much fun and super light.

I also have a ADC 9 weight with a Ross Reel, but didn't take a pic of it. It's set up for salmon fishing.

6 weights are a little heavy for most of the state, but there are a few places/times where they are a huge benefit. Overall, I prefer the Ross reels, but the Lamsons and Galvins are almost as good. The Galvins are heavier but built like tanks. The Lamson is light and has a bigger arbor than the Ross. The Ross reels are just overall the best.

I tie my flies on a Renzetti Travel Vise, and carry a C&F Marco Polo vise/tool kit when fishing with a bag of the most comely used materials. The Marco Polo has saved my bacon on more than one fishing trip. Couple of times, I was striking out and so syned the water and figured out what bugs the trout were feeding on. Then pulled out the vise and materials and built a fly to match the bug.

Once in a while I'll go belly boating. I have a couple of them. 4 sets of waders, 3 sets of boots. couple of nets... Ya, my basement looks like a well stocked man cave.

Mom's comin' 'round to put it back the way it ought to be.

Love the "old school" gear Pook. Used to fish with a guy back in the day that refused to cast a fly on anything other than bamboo rod. Once you get the ease for them, nothing ever feels as good. Considering my affinity to accumulate and the price of bamboo rods, I've avoided them.

    Thanks.

The Allcocks is a medium slow full action. Definitely different then graphite or fiberglass. I'm no bamboo expert. This one was just too hard to pass up.

    Nice set of rods/reels.

Haven't got into tying my own. Not enough time.

BTDT as a kid. Guess it didn't take because I didn't fish for many years. A flask of whisky is easier.

That rod is awesome. I have an old eagle claw fly rod that I have been using for a while now. Can't beat fly fishing!
