    Default WHAC Steel Dogs Match

A lot of you folks already know that we hold a .22LR Steel Dogs Match on the third Saturday of every month at our range in Brighton. What you may not know is that we also hold a center fire version of this game which we shoot on the second Saturday of this month.

This coming Saturday, June 9, 2012 is the second Saturday of the month and we will be shooting our Steel Dogs match starting at 10:00am. This event requires 40 rounds of ammunition. We shoot four strings of fire (10 targets per string) at distances ranging from ~200yds to ~550yds.

You can shoot it with either a semi-auto or a bolt action scoped rifle between .20 and .30 caliber (minimum bullet weight is 40gr and maximum is 210gr) flying at 3,200 fps or less. For safety reason, soft-point ammunition, steel core, armor-piercing and tracer/incendiary ammo is specifically disallowed.

Most people shoot rifles chambered in calibers between .204 Ruger and .30-06; just make sure that that it meets the above criteria so that we don't destroy the steel plates.

There is more information at the following link (though please note that the round count has been increased to 40): http://www.wildlifehunters.com/steeldogs.htm

I hope to see you folks at the range on Saturday,
    Cy

PS Shoot me a PM if you have any questions about this event.

Someone sent me a PM asking if they would be shooting all 10 shots of every string consecutively and the answer to that is 'no'. The way we shoot this match we have wave of shooters (usually 7 or 8) and they each shoot at the same numbered target (one person at the time). Each shooter has up to 15 seconds to shoot the target then the next shooter hits it and so on.

I hope to see you folks at the range tomorrow morning!

Why does this have to be the one Saturday of the month that is already taken by IDPA. Dang. Maybe I'll have to just settle making to 22 matches sometime.

The Colorado Shooting Community is blessed to have so many great matches to choose from but, at the same time, it is difficult to find a spot to set up a new shooting event.

We try our best to shoot year-round and I know that sometimes the IDPA matches up in Dumont needs to be canceled due to snow so, (even though I don't want to think about Winter weather) if a FRIDPA match happens to get canceled this coming Winter, come freeze your butt with us at WHAC!

On a separate note, the .22LR Dogs match is a hoot! I must admit that I enjoy that event the most. I never thought that ringing steel at 200 yards with a .22LR could be so fun. We shoot that one on the third Saturday of the month (next week) and you will find a few IDPA pistoleros at the range for it. I hope you can join us!

PM me before the next .22lr steel dog match. I will give you a ride. Cy, Juan and Sandra run a great match and there are some very nice rim fire rifles showing up to that match.

Sounds like fun. My rimfire rifle is a cheapie. Most of my $$ is in the centerfires, shotguns and handguns. I guess I'll see how it does though, only ever taken it to about 100yds, mostly bought it to get my wife shooting who was an anti before me. Maybe I'll like it and want to invest in a real rimfire rifle.

Picked up a Walther p22 for her a couple months back, man that thing is awesome to shoot.

What are most of the high end gun people shooting, custom 10-22s, bolt guns, or???

A few 15-22s, some 10-22, then there are the nicer CZs. Most of the glass on the rimfire rifles costs more than my Marlin 795. I put a pair of these tech sights on it and it shoots better than I do (http://www.tech-sights.com/marlin.htm) I think the real serious shooters are paying more per round than I am. I like the Federal bulk packs. I don't feel like I'm wasting a lot of money when I miss

It's a hoot. IMO everyone should have something in .22lr Cy and most of the real shooters at that match will tell anyone who listens; You can save a lot of money and learn a lot about marksmanship with a .22lr

Nothing custom or fancy... There are a few stock 10/22's, some .22LR AR's, some bolt guns and a few others. In fact, the fellow who has most often won this event shoots a single shot rifle.

Most everyone shoots Scoped Rifles but CStone shoots Open Sights (and he kicks some serious butt with it).

Come check it out, you won't be disappointed!
