I used to hate when the old ladies would bring in guns to turn in to our PD after the death of their spouse. I would always recommend them to go to a former gun store and see a particular guy and ask to sell the guns. That particular guy would be fair to the widow and buy them at a good price and not screw them over. Also, the widow's get some money out of the deal.

I am curious to know, these "gun turn-ins"- how often does this happen?

Probably once every couple of months. Most of the guns were old and probably not worth a whole lot. But, at the time I didn't have as good of an understanding I do now on rough values of older guns. I wanted to make sure these old ladies got some money for them from someone who would not screw them over and take advantage of them. That was the primary reason they came to the PD to drop them off; they didn't want to deal with pawn shops or didn't have any knowledge on how to sell them.

Me personally? I wouldn't care as long as state and federal law were complied with. (i know you are being amusing!). The little old ladies bring the guns to the PD because they don't know the law, don't know where to go or what to do with the guns. The simplest answer for them is to hand them over to the police, especially at the PD I used to work at. Very citizen friendly. Lots of ammunition, guns, prescription drugs, dogs, cats, etc. all were dropped off to us.

JCSO did a joint thing with the DEA a few weeks ago for a Rx turn in up here in Evergreen... I think they said a total of 4 people showed up within their little 3 hr window. I figured that most people who have leftover pills just use the toilet method.

That pollutes the water supply as the drugs cannot be filtered out through the sanitation process. There have been studies that show drinking water to contain traces of different drugs.
