Scammers have their own card reader that can be installed on top of the actually ATM. So when you insert your card, it actually got scanned and phished by the scammer.

There has also been cases of the low life thieves installing skimmers inside gas pumps connected internally to steal your information, the external locks are cheap and easy to pick, also their are pocket skimmers that bad waitstaff at restaurants can use to steal your info, and if you have RFID cards thieves can steal your info when you walk by them......

This is what makes checking so difficult...My wife uses her card almost exclusively, but trying to go through everything with her and making sure everything can be accounted for always ends up making her feel defensive and is generally not a task I enjoy...
