There was a comment to an article on the "Blaze" where the poster had a very concise list of all mass shooting since Columbine. In every instance the perpetrator either was on prescribed psyhcotropics such a Xanax, Ritalin etc or had them in their system.

I've never used marijuana or any other illegal narcotics. Why? Because I had first-hand experience with legal and prescribed drugs that f'ed me up so bad that I never wanted to experience anything like it again.

I need to start this post by stating that in no way do I blame my parents for this; they were simply following the advice and directions of school administrators & doctors - the supposed "professionals".


Now I'm going to tell you something that most people don't know about me from one of the darkest periods of my life. I can recall details of my life when I was 4 years old, but the period of 1/2 way through 3rd grade through 1/2 way through the fourth grade is totally blank.


Back when I was 8 years old, in the third grade, my elementary school (no, not a doctor, the school) diagnosed me as hyperactive. They mandated to my parents that I be sent to a psychiatrist and be put on medication. This was in the early 1970's. Not knowing any better and following the direction of the "experts", this is exactly what happened. Within the first month I was prescribed 2 medications that were found to be ineffective. Then I was prescribed a new drug, ritalin. It was effective to modifying my behavior for a short period. The doctor (psychiatrist) continued to prescribe stronger and stronger drugs to control my behavior until I was effectively a walking zombie. While I have no memory of it, I'm told I got so crazy that I threatened to kill myself and my family and my mom had to tie me to my bed to keep everyone safe.


On Friday, January 19, 1973 (yes, I remember the date very well), things came to a boil at the school. I was in the fourth grade by then. I was removed from the classroom for raising my hand and tattling on the behavoir of another student. My dad came to pick me up. I was sure I was in seriously deep trouble with my dad but I will never forget that after he ordered me to go clean out my desk and get all of my things, he picked me up and carried me to the car. His words to me were "Don't worry, you're never going to this school again".


The next evening (yes, Saturday evening) I was getting enrolled in a private school whose only requirement for letting me enter was to give me the choice on whether I wanted to take the drugs or see the psychiatrist anymore. I didn't. That night was the television premiere of The Sound of Music which my dad had waited 8 years to finally get to see - THANK YOU DAD FOR YOUR SACRIFICE! Wouldn't you know it, but this school challenged me and had few problems with me above the normal ones you expect from young boys. Turns out that the original schools inability to challenge me caused the issues and the drugs turned me into a holy terror.


Why am I sharing all of this? Because I want you all to watch the video above and to know just what a danger all of these psychotropic drugs are that are getting prescribed in record numbers. If we don't do something to stop the use of these drugs except in the absolute most serious of cases, we will continue to see greater and greater numbers of displays of mass violence.

WOW! Thanks for sharing that. Im sorry you had to go thru that. I think we punish kids for being kids. That is really sad.

100% true. Our understanding of the human mind and how it works is still in its infancy. Doctors who try to tell you that they have "the answer" are at best omitting a lot of relevant data for a parent.

It is frightening how easy the docs are with the drugs, when often something as simple as diet change (standard American diet includes a crapton of chemicals and sugar that can often be at the root of behavioral problems) can solve the issue much more effectively and less harmfully.

It's amazing how my mood improves when I eat paleo which involves a ton more fats and protein than a normal diet would include. Ginsue's experiences are one of the prime reasons why I will do anything to avoid sending my son to public school.

I noticed that too. Eat paleo and I immediately begin to slim down, can work out almost every day and not feel shitty, have more energy in the early mornings, etc.

I don't know that paleo is "the" answer but I know its hard to do worse than the usual diet we have here, so whatever diet-change you can live with is probably a step in the right direction.

When my son was in the fourth grade my wife and I had a meeting with his teacher & the principal. The teacher told us she thought my son was hyperactive and might need Ritalin. I went nuts(flashbacks to my childhood)! I asked to see her psychiatric degree and told the principal that if I ever heard one of her staff say that sort of thing again I'd sue the teacher, the principal, the school and the district. The principal quickly defused the situation by telling the teacher she was way out of line. My son is a normal 20 year old man now without ever having to take those dangerous drugs.

On topic. Ginsue, that is quite the story, thank you for sharing it with us. I once went to the doctor with a perceived issue I was having. He recommended me Prozac so fast that my knee jerk reaction was to refuse them.

1. Huntsville, Alabama – February 5, 2010: 15-year-old Hammad Memon shot and killed another DiscoverMiddle School student Todd Brown. Memon had a history for being treated for ADHD and depression. He was taking the antidepressant Zoloft and “other drugs for the conditions.” He had been seeing a psychiatrist and psychologist.
2. Kauhajoki, Finland – September 23, 2008: 22-year-old culinary student Matti Saari shot and killed 9 students and a teacher, and wounded another student, before killing himself. Saari was taking an SSRI and a benzodiazapine. He was also seeing a psychologist.
3. Dekalb, Illinois – February 14, 2008: 27-year-old Steven Kazmierczak shot and killed five people and wounded 21 others before killing himself in a NorthernIllinoisUniversity auditorium. According to his girlfriend, he had recently been taking Prozac, Xanax and Ambien. Toxicology results showed that he still had trace amount of Xanax in his system. He had been seeing a psychiatrist.
4. Jokela, Finland – November 7, 2007: 18-year-old Finnish gunman Pekka-Eric Auvinen had been taking antidepressants before he killed eight people and wounded a dozen more at JokelaHigh School in southern Finland, then committed suicide.
5. Cleveland, Ohio – October 10, 2007: 14-year-old Asa Coon stormed through his school with a gun in each hand, shooting and wounding four before taking his own life. Court records show Coon had been placed on the antidepressant Trazodone.
6. Red Lake, Minnesota – March 2005: 16-year-old Jeff Weise, on Prozac, shot and killed his grandparents, then went to his school on the Red Lake Indian Reservation where he shot dead 7 students and a teacher, and wounded 7 before killing himself.
7. Greenbush, New York – February 2004: 16-year-old Jon Romano strolled into his high school in east Greenbush and opened fire with a shotgun. Special education teacher Michael Bennett was hit in the leg. Romano had been taking “medication for depression”. He had previously seen a psychiatrist.
8. Wahluke, Washington – April 10, 2001: Sixteen-year-old Cory Baadsgaard took a rifle to his high school and held 23 classmates and a teacher hostage. He had been taking the antidepressant Effexor.
9. El Cajon, California – March 22, 2001: 18-year-old Jason Hoffman, on the antidepressants Celexa and Effexor, opened fire on his classmates, wounding three students and two teachers at GraniteHillsHigh School. He had been seeing a psychiatrist before the shooting.
10. Williamsport, Pennsylvania – March 7, 2001: 14-year-old Elizabeth Bush was taking the antidepressant Prozac when she shot at fellow students, wounding one.
11. Conyers, Georgia – May 20, 1999: 15-year-old T.J. Solomon was being treated with the stimulant Ritalin when he opened fire on and wounded six of his classmates.
12. Columbine, Colorado – April 20, 1999: 18-year-old Eric Harris and his accomplice, Dylan Klebold, killed 12 students and a teacher and wounded 26 others before killing themselves. Harris was on the antidepressant Luvox. Klebold’s medical records remain sealed. Both shooters had been in anger-management classes and had undergone counseling. Harris had been seeing a psychiatrist before the shooting.
13. Notus, Idaho – April 16, 1999: 15-year-old Shawn Cooper fired two shotgun rounds in his school, narrowly missing students. He was taking a prescribed SSRI antidepressant and Ritalin.
14. Springfield, Oregon – May 21, 1998: 15-year-old Kip Kinkel murdered his parents and then proceeded to school where he opened fire on students in the cafeteria, killing two and wounding 25. Kinkel had been taking the antidepressant Prozac. Kinkel had been attending “anger control classes” and was under the care of a psychologist.
