    Default LEO and Guns ??

I heard a story at work, this guy was living in Wilmington NC and said he bought a gun at the gunstore(this was around 2000-2001). He had a cop buddy and told him he picked up a gun and the cop asked what kind, and he said "Look it up" and later that week cop buddy told him What kind of gun it was and even the Serial. Is this real? I am calling bullshit, but maybe some LEO can shed some light on this.

If NC has a permit or registry system, like a lot of the eastern states seem to have, then yes, it's possible.

Here in Colorado, until 2003, I as an FFL had to send in a record of each and every firearm bought from me to the local city PD pawn detail, and the city kept those records until the state passed local pre-emption and forced them to expunge their registry and destroy those files (if they actually did?)

Many places still have a permit system in place for handguns, so they'd be traceable that way, though that generally doesn't apply to long guns in most jurisdictions.

Unless one of those permit or registration systems exist, the cop can't trace the gun through ATF without having a make, model and serial number. Though it's possible he either leaned on or was buddies with the gunstore owner, to get that information.

I know NC had a pistol permit when I left in 2001.

The cop could have gone to the store and the owner may have obliged him. Just because the cop found out doesn't mean that he necessarily had to force the information out of anyone.

22 yrs and retired as Chief. I never would have been able to do that, unless it was in NCIC or CIB. That said, the east coast seems to play by some strange rules sometimes.

Thanks for chiming in as a voice of credibility. It's good to have here.

Speculators are why the price of gas is so damn high. I like truth.
