Our usual hummingbirds decided not to stick around this summer... kind of a bummer. I wonder if its because its still so cool, odd because its almost july.

Those are cool. We get these really big toads around here. They make huge toad logs. I thought is was goose poop first time I saw it.

I'm under the impression that before we hunted most of our big game to extinction, will share the plains with bison and other grazers. So we shouldn't be surprised, but I still am every time.
Elk went as far as the East coast back in the day.
I knew a guy who hunted elk out east of Limon. He always bagged some nice bulls out there.

They are in Pennsylvania today!
I forgot an important piece of information about those elk!
They were at 120 yards.

That is a fine example of the North American big game management method. Elk will again become plains animals, but I would guess some elk populations will still inhabit high elevation tundra and spruce-fir forests.

Are you familiar with the American Prairie Reserve project? I think it's pretty interesting. https://www.americanprairie.org/
Dan Flores is always pitching for it when he does podcast interviews.
EDIT: That reminds me that I need to read Coyote America by Dan Flores and America Before by Graham Hancock. Ordered just now.

Very cool birds, I love their honking call from the cattail wetlands. You're lucky to have them on the eastern plains. They are rare or uncommon on the western slope. I've only once had a few Yellow-headed Blackbirds briefly visit our feeders in Central Orchard Mesa outside Palisade. It's a species in rapid decline due to habitat loss.

No, but I'll look into it. Working like a dog on the Palisade farm now. Sheesh, it's hot here and the mosquitos are out in force.

Only through reintroduction, though.

Reintroduction is the reason Colorado and most other states in the US today still have elk.
The main point being that while we associate Elk w/ the mountains in a modern context, and thus the idea of them on the plains is fascinating, historically we had them all over. I think we are bugling passed each other on this one. :D
Nebraska has an elk season, no mountains there...
I?ve seen elk in Oklahoma.
American Kestrels used a nest box on our Palisade house this year. Only three eggs were laid with two apparently infertile so this lone male chick gets all the mice, lizards and grasshoppers it wants. Kestrels (our smallest American falcon) also nested in another box in an apricot tree on the farm.

I build a lot of nesting boxes that get used. Never seen a more freaked out chick though... you must be the first thing it's ever seen.
-lol not that I'm calling you scary looking... i wouldnt know. Giggle

My daughter keeps asking me to ask Steve about the otters.

I'm the first purple people monster it has ever seen. But chicks typically have their mouths open anytime one approaches the box because they expect to be fed when something arrives. And yes, I'm sure I'm pretty scary to young chicks.

I see what you did there. : )
My daughter keeps asking me to ask Steve about the otters.
We saw otter tracks and slides last winter but no animals here since. Did watch an otter at Beaver Reservoir on April 27, and our first ever mink over the snow on the river from the house on March 27. Haven't seen otters at Beaver Reservoir since. Looked yesterday. The lake is higher than I've seen in many years. Lots of water this year is great.
We have four dippers in the nest box now. They'll fledge in another week. The first since the 2013 flood. Always good fun.
Having seen those dippers in person, those are cool to have around.

What can I say, it's real and I'm Boy Scout honest. 🙂
Having seen those dippers in person, those are cool to have around.
You should see them soon, before they fledge. I might band the chicks tomorrow. Your family and Chick N will get an invite to our Moose Packing Party July 21.
I've seen several moose recently, a cow with newborn calf a ways up canyon, and two big bulls near Brainard yesterday. This evening I walked through the forest to a small meadow a hundred yards from the cabin and came upon a yearling bull. At first he spooked and sprinted ten yards. I gave a soft bull grunt and he returned walking within about six yards of me. I mimicked feeding on shrubs, shaking them a bit. He walked a bit closer feeding along the way. I was just another, funny looking moose.
I think that a mark of woods experience, is knowing when you can be loud (i.e. sounding like an animal doing loud animal things).
Here's a shot this morning of the young bull I spotted last night. He's munching on young aspen trees.

There is a semi large bull snake I'm probably going to need to relocate from my mother's property in the next week if it keeps trying to share the patio with the dogs. She's not (usually) prone to exaggeration & said it was as long as the oversized loveseat plus some... so likely 55" or more.
I'll try & get a picture before I catch it. : )
How come no one eats any snakes besides rattlesnakes? I think you should start a trend. I'd take a bull snake, but it'd probably bother my chickens.

Id prefer not to hurt it since its pretty useful to control wee critters. Unfortunately it's just big enough to be a pest on its own.

I wasn't sure anyone would even remember that. Long time ago.
I had a friend over from Grand Junction and we went out Fri. and Sat. and managed to shoot 695 prairie dogs. But the high lights of the two days were the coyotes. Friday there was a liter of 5 along with an adult that hung out all day. One of the pups came to the pond and drank while we were shooting just couple hundred yards away. On his way back to cover he found one of the dead pdogs and grabbed it and took it with him. The Sat. morning we went to a different pdog town and had 6 coyote pups show up and start grabbing the dead. One pup just stayed on scene and was eating his prize. We kept shooting and the pups just hung out, some times leaving with a dead pdog in their mouth. One pup was eating about 120 yards away when another pdog came out of its hole about 30 yards up wind of the pup. I decided to shoot the pdog and my buddy watched to see the reaction of the pup. He never even flinched and not 10 seconds after I shot the pdog, the pup must've caught wind of fresh dead pdog because he bird dogged his way right to it, and started chowing down. Also watched as 3 pups settled a dispute about who got to eat what. Pecking order was in effect. Was fun watching them interact around us.
One pup ate two full pdogs and then needed a drink. Not the best pics. but without pics. it's kind of hard to sell the story. I've had coyotes come in and grab dead pdogs before, but never had em hang around for hours.

Lastly, we've had a lot of antelope action behind my house this summer. Two sets of twins been hanging around quite a lot. Again, not the best pic. with the phone.

I'd love to see that. Glad to hear you didn't shoot the coyotes, but understandable if you did (especially if you turn them in). I'm very curious how you kept track of how many prairie dogs you shot though.
I'm very curious how you kept track of how many prairie dogs you shot though. All reloads, so as you shoot a miss is primer up and a hit is neck up when put back in the box. Then count em up when you're done.
That's a lot of rifle shooting in one day. Nice work.
that was two days, but still had a warm barrel or two at times.
Okay Hummer, here is another bird identification for you. The pictures are terrible because this bird is inconsiderate and built a dumb nest and put the eggs at the bottom.
The bird is about 2/3 to 1/2 the size of a finch, looks similar, but with a beak about twice as long. It has a loud call that sounds more like an insect than a bird. Instead of a nice round nest full of padding, it just threw a ton of sticks into this bird house and chucked some eggs at the bottom. The eggs are about the size of my pinky and are a redish swirl color over a tan/white base. Seems to co-exist with the 100's of finches living at my and my neighbor's house. I'll attempt to get a photo later which hopefully isn't too difficult since I see this bird every day out my window. What do you think?

Irving, you've got a House Wren there. Cool little bird but aggressive and sometimes will puncture the eggs of other cavity nesting birds. Often they'll build several nests but use only one (to limit competition). Not related to finches but more closely to American Dippers.
Irving, FWIW the Merlin Bird ID app from Cornell Lab is free and amazingly great.
That's the one! That scold sound she makes is interesting.

This is the peak of season for hummingbirds in the mountains of Colorado. Yesterday we fed 9 gallons of sugar water to thousands of birds of three species.
On Tuesday I caught a female Broad-tailed Hummingbird that I had banded as an adult on July 28, 2010, 5 days short of nine years ago. This would make her at least 10 years and 2 months old, our oldest Broad-tailed and our oldest hummingbird recapture to date. Pretty exciting! She was also interesting in that she had "leucistic" white feathers in the forecrown and no iridescent gorget feathers which we associate with older females.
At 10 yrs 2 months old, our Broad-tailed Hummingbird record is two years short of the record of 12 years, 1 month old, set in 1976 in Colorado.
Two weeks ago a bird bander in Idaho recaptured a female Black-chinned Hummingbird he banded as an adult in June 2008. She is at least 12 years and one month old and breaks the Black-chinned longevity record by almost a year. Our oldest female Black-chinned in Palisade was at least 9 years 2 months old.

We use mist nets, cage wire traps and cloth bonnet traps with flowers or feeders inside. Federal and state licenses of course.

The 50% that survive the first year might live on average 4-8 years for females, a year or so less for males. Amazing that a 3.5 gram bird will live to migrate to Mexico and back for several years.
If you feed them they will come. It's as simple as that. Our feeders and flowers bring in a lot of birds. Figure about 550 birds per gallon per day, maybe 2-4 times that number of birds during migration. Lots of variables. I'm running 19 feeders here now, and eight feeders at our farm outside Palisade.
Here is that House Wren. Terrible picture, but I couldn't get any closer. This shot shows her coloring.

We have a little flycatcher that builds a nest under the deck above our lower patio. This year she hatched 3 little ones. We always worry because so far, every year, at least one or two fall out of the nest and die. This year all 3 made it. I was hanging a sheet over the deck railing a few days ago and saw two of the babies fly off into the trees. Went downstairs and found the 3rd sitting on the patio. When I opened the door it flew away, too. Mama is still hanging around but haven't seen the babies.
We get those house wrens, too.
I don't see them around the house but there are a lot of killdeer in the area. I think I've posted some pics of them before. One left it's eggs right in the rock driveway at work. They do the strangest things.

Holy sugar water batman. Feeding hummers up there sounds almost like a job.
Our numbers seem to be down a bit this year. I only run two feeders and this summer I'm not even filling them all the way up because it takes too long for them to drink it before I need to change/clean the feeder. Last year was a high in numbers for us.
Never knew they lived that long.

Are all the gates open yet? Sign says second gate opens on July 15th, but after the 15th it still wasn't open. Turning around right there with a trailer sure is awesome.

Both open, in fact the first Pic with the Alpine sign was the second gate.

There are (edit) five more bodies of water above Loch Lommand and the highest and least visited is Ice Lake. I think the third one up is Steuart Lake.

Ahhh, for some reason I thought there were three lakes above LL, we were actually attempting the first lake above LL today, and the clouds left me uneasy so we turned back.
ETA: I'd be interested in hiking with you if our schedules aligned and you could use another person.
I also remembered only three, but I went and looked at the map for a refresher. I honestly probably won't get to it, but I'm hit you up if I do.
BG, the bird may be a Cordilleran Flycatcher which nests on shelves of rock or on man made structures. It's call is a simple and distinctive whistle, whee-seet! Formerly named Western Flycatcher but split from the Pacific-slope Flycatcher some years ago. Cordilleran is a Spanish term for mountain. Another possible ledge nesting bird that might be around your place is the Say's Phoebe.

I had a tiny one show up on the doorbell video but he was unimpressively pale and tiny, and I didn't get a pic.
Even though I have covered up the IR LED on this doorbell, the warmth attracts bugs and then the hunters come out. I had some creepy ghostly white videos of spiders but my wife made me burn them.
Lots of fly, moth, spider videos on the doorbell cam.

Spent some time visiting with the folks who own general store/Christmas store/tourist stop in Gould. They had a bunch of humming bird feeders with at least 4 different varieties of humming birds feeding.
I could watch those birds all day.

Probably a good thing you didn't let her go. My cousin's dogs chased after Bigfoot and one of them got kicked and stomped. She's still hurtin' a month later. Could have killed her.

The local mountain Broad-tailed and lowland Black-chinned Hummingbirds are abundant but the migrant Rufous and Calliope Hummingbirds are very scarce this year. I just returned from banding 217 birds in Sedona, mostly Black-chinned and Anna's, a few Rufous and only one Broad-tailed. No Calliope or Costa's this year but I did see a Rivoli's (Magnificent) Hummingbird. It's a strange year....

Our broad-tailed population has exploded in the past two weeks. There's one or two rufous around now but they usually pass through quickly (by far the most aggressive hummers). Don't think I've ever seen a calliope or black-chinned here. I'm refilling almost one gallon of nectar per day now.

Nice! I heard that it is the Oklahoma Spider migration in South East Colorado this month, so apparently thousands of those will be crawling around looking for mates in SE Co.
My daughter just got a Pink-toed tarantula for her birthday yesterday.
Here it is, and her holding it. She went in and held it by herself with zero encouragement from me.

Lovely spiders!
I know first hand two things that might be useful:
If not securely snapped under that bitty plastic tap on one side only, the top hatch of that style cage can easily be pushed open by a medium sized garden snail.
A tarantula is smart enough to learn where the door is & how it works.

They're real casual pets. Our daughters like to sit on her shoulder as she wandered around the house.
That's like when my wife commented that our dog was "so good!" on the kayak. Yeah, she doesn't like water and has no where else to go. A 6" drop is enough to kill a tarantula.

It also works in reverse, as the daughter found out. A cat can flip it open, then use the tarantula like a hockey puck. Which you might notice the cat playing with, when you bring your daughter home from school. A happy resolution is not in the stars for said arachnid, or tears to follow from the daughter. .

If you were replying to me, that was mostly my point though I didn't state it very well at all. I was more concerned about the spider getting out & being hurt than being afraid of the spider just 'escaping'.

No ma'am. Kazoo talking about the spider riding on a shoulder.
I'd mostly be worried about the cat batting it around or knocking the cage off the table.

Indeed, my cat is fascinated with the garden snails & I can't have the cage & cat left unattended together. I came home once to find the cage tipped on its side & all occupants unaccounted for. Then had to grab a headlamp in order to trace the shiny trails to locate almost everyone that afternoon. Unfortunately that didn't work for all who fled because Monkey played soccer with some of them on the hardwood. I did eventually find everyone but it took a week for the last snail to be recovered (with Monkey's help no less) & no one's shells were severely damaged/none of them died thank goodness.
Wow, none of them died? We used to have snails in the fish tank, but the cichlid would eat them. He would pull them off the tank and smash them against the glass until the shell broke.

Nope, none died from that event.
We had Cichlids a long time ago. We named one male "the big meanie" & I bet you can guess why.
Now I only have one fish & a very large tank for a 17 year old Tambaqui (Pacu) named Stampy.

Wine and dinner at the lake this evening, Lefthand Reservoir at 10,649 ft. elevation, 24 minutes from the cabin. We watched fish jumping all over the lake and 3 bull elk feed across the tundra. With binoculars we saw three people sky lined on Niwot Ridge at dusk walking to some research cabins on the divide. They were on the horizon in the level area on the left side of the picture. Later we saw a group of elk at the same spot, cross over the divide from the west and move down the slope. Perfect weather, perfect evening.

We stayed watching the elk until dark. Mount Audubon is the big peak to the right, Indian Peaks to the left. Pawnee Pass just left of center is where I took Bullwinkle last October.

Cichlids are territorial, but it makes them interesting in an aquarium. They do require some education as to which ones can cohabitate. I had a friend that had a ginormous Oscar. It recognized him and would come to him as he approached the aquarium. I figured it was because the Oscar was hand-fed.
I had some Red-belly Pacus when I lived in TX that got pretty large. They were made illegal and I ended up having to destroy them when I moved (I wanted to find them a new home). Turned out that they could reproduce in the native waters and become an invasive species. They were the closest thing I've ever had to piranha in my aquariums.

Yep. She has cute little teeth like a toddler, recognizes me like any pet knows & prefers it's owner & even does tricks for just me (not my husband). Her favorite treats are blueberries & hot dogs. Named her Stampy after Bart's elephant because she used to headbutt the other Tambaqui. Sadly we lost the other 2 (Forrest and Bubba) many years ago so she's all alone. She'll be 18 years in Dec., pretty freaking old for a pet fish.
You've done well to have not lost that fish over 18 years.
A bit surprised to see spotted ones this late in the season.

Mrs bo and Reba nearly tripped over a doe and fawn while hiking State Forest state park earlier this week. Didn't get pics as everybody was too surprised by the situation. She said both looked very healthy and fawn still has some spots.
Will post pics and video of moose later today.
Much as I hate to do it, must give credit to CPW, Sate Forest state park is an all around great place to hang out.
This morning I got another view of our "yard bull', which I'm pretty sure is the same fellow I posted to page 19 of this thread. He's grown a little and his antlers are filling out, still in velvet.

These folks learned the hard way that you can't leave the doors open with only a screen as protection when you live in bear habitat. The result of such carelessness is a dead bear and cubs dying or going to rehab.

Couple use baseball bat, punches to fight off mother bear, cub that broke into Pine home

PINE, Colo. -- A couple fought off a mother bear and her cub with punches and a baseball bat after the animals broke into their home on Monday night, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said.
The bear was found Tuesday morning and euthanized, Colorado Parks and Wildlife said.
The sheriff's office said the mother bear and her cub entered the home on Zurich Drive in Pine, about 10 miles southwest of Conifer, about 8:30 p.m. and began eating a loaf of bread.
As Jon Johnson and his wife, George Ann Field, were watching TV, they heard noises and went upstairs to investigate.
As Johnson turned a corner into the kitchen, he was face to face with the mother bear, Colorado Parks and Wildlife said.
The mother bear then attacked the 71-year-old Johnson in what Colorado Parks and Wildlife said was described as a boxing match.
Johnson punched the bear while Field struck it with a baseball bat several times until both bears ran out through the screen door they used to enter the home.
"George Ann got behind and hit her with the bat, which is why the head print is in the wall," Johnson said.
Surveillance video shows there was a second cub outside that did not enter the home.
Johnson suffered numerous cuts and scratches to his face, chest and both arms but was not seriously injured, the sheriff's office said. He was treated at the home. Field was not injured.

Jon Johnson and his wife, George Field, fought off a bear that broke into their Pine home on Monday, Aug. 26, 2019.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers searched for the bears until about midnight Monday. They returned with a U.S. Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services dog team on Tuesday morning.
It was the same dog team that was used to track down a mountain lion that attacked an 8-year-old Bailey boy last week.
About 5:50 a.m., the dog team found the bear in the immediate area and she was tracked for the next hour.
The bear was euthanized just before 7 a.m., about 900 yards from the home. The cub has not been found, Colorado Parks and Wildlife said.
DNA samples will be sent to the University of Wyoming Forensics Lab to confirm it's the bear from the attack.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife policy says that when a bear attacks a human and there is injury, the animal must be euthanized.
Officials said bears are becoming very active in the foothills and mountains as they eat as much as possible before going into winter hibernation.

That's exactly right. I hate it so much when people are stupid and it causes an animal to be euthanized. We'd all be way better off if we euthanized stupid people. Everyone has a dumbass attack on occasion, but for some people it's just a way of life.
Quite honestly, if I had an encounter with a bear like that and came away with just a few scratches, I wouldn't report it.
My guess is that there is more to this story than simply having a screen door. I wouldn't doubt if the bears were encouraged to hang out around a random home in the woods. Maybe some extracuricular feeding going on or at the least some poor garbage management in bear country.

Just the stiff breeze, all the lakes at Ranger are small and calm, doesnt take much to ripple. In no wind conditions that is the clearest lake I have ever seen.
I watched fish hit bait or lures 30' out and 4' deep.

Are both vids working?
In the first one the lake is about 50yds across and the second one is about 60yds.
When either bull stopped eating and stared across the lake, it made you wonder if 50-60yds of lake was enough cushion to exit calmly if needed.
The cow seemed to not care we were there.
First video there were about 20 people watching the bull, second video was just us and moose for about 30mins until a few hikers came by. Difference between a Sunday afternoon and a Tuesday afternoon.
Of the 7 days spread over two trips we saw moose on 3 different days. Reba and I came across two cows grazing a meadow on the hike to Lake Agnes.
Crows were going nuts next door which clued me in on this guy,

In the spring to mid summer they will be brown mixed with hoary white patches of hair as they are shedding. By late summer into the rut they wear a sleek black coat--dark as night. That's the danger driving in moose country because they often step from the trees into the road at night and they can be very hard to see even in the headlights. And moose seldom look before they cross the road because they think they're the biggest critters around.

About 5 years ago I removed several hundred trees to install a new septic tank and leach field. We replanted in low grass and native flowers for hummingbirds. It's gotten better and this year it really was awesome. The hummers are active on the penstemons, agastache and many others. The red flower in the photo of the buck deer is Penstemon barbatus, a perpetual nectar machine. Not a minute goes by without the birds using and fighting over the flowers. Here's some pics from 2017 and 2019:

While not native to north America my favorite to plant for the nectar lovers is Nicotiana Sylvestris.
Separately it's very showy in the landscape.
I've just one bird that decided to live in my yard this year, though I heard someone new fly through yesterday. :-)

Do you only grow it in the greenhouse? I know that people in the south plant Nicotiana or flowering tobacco for hummingbirds, and I've see it used around Phoenix and south Texas.

No. In the yard only.
Its considered an annual here in Colorado, however I have many varieties of plants (including these) that are several years old, die back to the ground & overwinter under peat. Im pretty fortunate to have some decent microclimates on my properties & I've nicknamed these areas my tri-annual beds.
They will overseed as well & grow quickly. If you want to try them I'll send you some seeds from my plants which have proven to be rather hardy.

Two Cooper's Hawks. Looks like an adult and a juvenile but I can't be sure from the resolution. Common predators of urban/suburban birds and their populations are growing while other bird populations are declining. I think Cooper's have taken all our woodpeckers this year. Not good for the forest.

You are correct. The other adult was about 20 feet down the fence. They made a nest in a tree across the street this year and hang out in my back yard.

In the Pawnee National Grasslands on Sunday we came across a little Western Hognose Snake, about 8" long. When we put it back on the grass it burrowed into tufts of dried grass as hognose do.
Long ago when I worked on the Brush power plant I caught a mature hognose and took it to my cousin who kept snakes. That snake named HN for it's scientific name Heterodon nasicus, lived another 9 years in captivity.

Those are cool snakes.
They are. Hognose are rattlesnake mimics, which I discovered when I found HN. I was running the concrete plant at Brush and picked up some galvanized sheet metal in the yard when it reared up, hissed and rattled it's tail like a rattler. But, it didn't have any rattles, so I caught it. Turned out to be a gentle pet snake.
Here's a snip from a trail cam video in my yard. I walked out the door to see this fine bull walking by. He turned to say goodbye. Wasn't quick enough to get my camera on him but the Stealth Cam did. Notice he's got an aspen tree in his antlers.
I need to get some better trail cameras.

The fall bird migration is well underway. This Hermit Thrush was catching bugs in the yard. Closely related to robins but a little smaller, it is recognizable by its bold triangular spots in the front and the bright rust colored tail and rump. It breeds in the higher mountain forests and is known for singing one of the most beautiful bird songs.

The record is of the occurrence of the species in the state of Colorado as documented through photographic and descriptive evidence and accepted by the Colorado Bird Records Committee. As only the 4th found here it is a very rare bird in CO.
Interesting that all it takes is a photo of a bird, but photos of wolves, elk, moose, etc aren't accepted as being present on an area.
Well those species are already on the state list but if you were to discover a Tule elk in Colorado that would be a new record
