Those were all ammonites from 65 million to 140 million years ago when wyoming was under water
My brother in laws back yard.
Where were those guys back in Sept?
Where were those guys back in Sept?
Probably the same place, where you couldn't get them. [Coffee]
It looks like I'll have to keep the electric fence energized. I thought the bears would den up with the very cold temps but not so with this bear. Yogi visited twice in the morning, first at 12:11 am. I went to bed about that time, then noticed a light was on. It was the motion detector light over the dining room window. There he was licking up a little bird seed I'd put out for the bunny. I shooed him off with the shotgun, but he returned before 4 a.m.
When the snow builds up to touch the electric fence wire it interferes with the conduction so Mrs. Hummer disconnected it last week. I'll have to shovel snow or disconnect the lowest wire.
Funny, I still have a valid bear license but not for this area.

On Friday night a bull moose crossed the river and walked through the yard and messed up the fence wire. He might get a little shock next time.
That's a good looking bear.
That's a good looking bear.
Yea, he'd look better stuffed and on a platform in my living room. He is really impressive when you look out the dining room window and see him a mere 6 feet away. Mrs. Hummer saw him too and said, "that's a big bear!"
How many more bear seasons are there? Maybe I can come help you out.
I appreciate the offer. The bear tag is concurrent with the three deer/elk rifle seasons so even though my elk license was for 2nd season, I can also hunt bear during both first and third season. But my bear tag is specific to GMU 12, 23, 24, 25,26,33, 131 & 231. Too far away and too late in season for bear to be worth the time and expense to hunt 3rd season. Plus, I've been away from home several weeks to prep and go hunting.
If I took the time it might be worthwhile to concentrate on hunting only bear in the 1st season, or draw for an early season bear tag. Unfortunately, I couldn't draw a bear tag for the area where I live.

I have seen alot of turkeys in wild but never this many in a flock. About a dozen more not in pics.

If you're unarmed, you are a victim.
I was up at Heil Valley Ranch above Boulder hiking for the weekend and saw my first live wild turkeys. They were big! Made me hungry. ;)

When they leave tracks in the snow, you can see the drag marks from their tails.
The biggest numbers I’ve personally seen are 500+ birds just after they came out of the roost. A sea of black in a corn field. This was in Colorado.
That used to be a common sight in Nebraska. My turkey hunting buddies said they would see 30+ toms in full strut. The farmers would say the same thing and how the numbers are down significantly all over the state. Colorado seems to be on the rise however
Turkey populations across the country have been on the rise for decades, apparently. But like you said sniper, some individual areas are seeing declines.

Never seen that many all together. But it's common to see 10 or 15 rafters of them that would probably total that in a short drive down the road. They're everywhere up here.

Yup, that's the dining facility and dumpsters in the background.
The Danes seem to spill a lot of food between the back door and the dumpster.
Also saw Muskox and Arctic Hares, but the pics came out bad due to the 22 hours of night right now.
How long are you up there? Pretty sure Muskox have the longest hair in nature with the exception of a horse's tail. Not to mention their unmatched cold tolerance.

Forgot this yesterday.
Sort of is. It's a javelina, aka collared peccary.
Right, but not a pig. They aren't related. Also, mountain goats aren't goats.

I suppose now you're going to tell us they're bison not buffalo.
I suppose now you're going to tell us they're bison not buffalo.
I could, but that seems more douchy know-it-all, as opposed to the fun fact vibe I was going for.
Also, mountain goats aren't goats.
They aren't native to CO either, another introduced species screwing up the place.

So what are the goats and trout screwing up?
I was using trout as an example of a non-native species that many people would assume is native, no weigh in on the other part. However, I can't think of a way that mountain goats are screwing anything up. Don't they have a pretty small population? Unless he means putting more resections on domestic grazing or something.

Been here 50+ yrs, much of it outside in "wilderness" settings. I don't remember anyone arguing against goats being here.
Not sure who the goats might be displacing or harming when they are 300 hundred feet up the canyon walls in Ladore Canyon.
Now that I think of it, when I'm thinking of conflicting with domestic grazing, that's with big Horn sheep. I'm also curious what conflicts mountain goats are causing.
Mountain goats can trigger rock falls. Those bastard not-goats.
You spend months hunting and not seeing anything. Only to go in someone's yard to have it full of bucks you wouldn't pass up on your first day of the season.

My late father was a docent at the Sonora Desert Museum, snake handler. My mom threatened to kick him out if ever brought a snake home LOL. I have a cousin that studied the coatimundi as part of her PhD. She later got married there. I used to spend many sunsets perched up at Gates Pass during college-no wonder I didn't do so well that first year haha. Loved to ride the motorcycle out to Old Tucson and the Museum.
Now is the perfect time of year to be in Tucson, after May through October not so much!

We almost stopped at Old Tucson, and decided that it was best saved for when the kids were with us. I have a dual sport (Honda CRF250L) lined up to buy right before we leave, and that thing will become very intimate with the roads in and around Tucson, especially the dirt ones.

Not necessarily a "wildlife" photo, but this step is required for me to get the wildlife photo - tying the flies. This is where the fish food gets made and prime-time begins in six weeks so it's tying time:

An FYI for everyone, the plural for cactus is either cacti or cactuses. Both are correct, but in the 60’s & 70’s down around Yuma, we would know you were a tourist if you said cactuses.......

There's been a Saw-whet Owl calling around our yard since Christmas. I've called him in a number of times but haven't gotten good views or a photo since he's stayed high in the trees. Saw-whets are nocturnal so all this is in the dark. On January 10, we mounted a 2nd owl nest box in the yard. So far, no sign that he's found a mate so today I painted the box with a brown latex stain and it fairly disappears in the yard. The nest hole is 18.5 feet off the ground.
I also have a box for Boreal Owl, a larger cousin to the Saw-whet. Both species could nest in our spruce-fir habitat. The Boreal box was painted gray so I gave it a camo finish and mounted it in the yard today, the hole 20.5 feet off the ground. We'reopeful that one of the boxes gets used in the next month or so. I'm including a pic of one of my Saw-whets for perspective.

That's some cool stuff, Hummer.
I've heard a GHO around here at night a couple of times but haven't spotted him yet.
Cool stuff. I really like owls. We have a GHO that roosts in the cottonwoods that hang over our backyard/patio. The damn crows sure do make a racket harassing him in the daytime.

We have a pair in our neighborhood. He's often in my big cottonwood in the back.
If I don't hear him for a few days I start to think maybe they've moved on, but there's so damn many rabbits and critters around here, I don't know what it would take to scar them off.
Several years ago Denver had a huge windstorm that dropped a lot of dead trees. A big cottonwood fell somewhere around Cherry Creek park. When it was being cut-up and hauled away, they found like 17 cat collars in a hollowed area. Owl nest for sure.
Yes, on the ground below Great-horned Owl nests I've found numerous cat skulls, pheasant feet and pack rat tails.

Nice photos, Hurley. Some of the cactus forests there are amazing, especially in the spring. Bird migration is beginning and soon the land will be rich in the songs of spring. Southeast AZ is one of the top birding hotspots in North America.
A great drive is from Tucson to Sonoita, south through Patagonia to Nogales and back north through Green Valley. Nogales used to be fun to visit but I don't know about now. I lived in Patagonia for a time when our family owned the Stage Stop Inn. Visit the Last Gasp Saloon where I was bartender. Our guests included John Wayne, Glen Ford, Steve McQueen and Chuck Norris, Linda Evans and many other stars. Several hundred westerns have been filmed there and in the San Rafael Valley.
Another great drive is from Tucson to Sierra Vista, Tombstone and Bisbee, then to Ramsey Canyon, south to Lochiel on the border and north through Patagonia. You'll see javelinas everywhere, guaranteed.

I've stomped around that area a bit back in the day. My ex business partner and friend has a sister that used to live north of Patagonia that we used to visit when we were doing work in Tucson. She took us across the border in Nogales and we always had a great time traveling down there with someone that spoke Spanish fluently. Her (now) ex husband was a 3rd gen cowboy and ran a large ranch on BLM land north of town and was also at one time, said to be one of the top guides in the area. We've ridden mock Lion hunts with him and his hounds in the hills around the area and there's some cool scenery for sure.

Thanks Hummer, the saguaro is truly spectacular, I had no idea how big/tall they were, and how many of them there were. I would encourage anyone that hasn't been to Tucson, to check it out sometime, it's a fairly cheap place to stay hotel wise. The Sonoran desert is nothing like the Mojave, which most are more familiar with due to Vegas, the Sonoran desert is quite vibrant, and I still haven't experienced spring here. I'll continue to post pictures for the folks who haven't been here, and the folks that have and appreciate it.

Lantana. In the Verbena family.
Bisbee is not what so ever what it used to be. I was born there & have seen it change. Still a fun day-outing but Im a little biased now. The Copper mine is definitely an attraction. My Grandfather worked in it after the war until he died unexpectedly. I have 34 relatives including him & my Grandmother in the cemetery too.
I'm not fond of Nogales anymore either. The market is a tourist destination but if youre not into trinkets I dont see much benefit, not a good representation of traditional mexican culture or art. There is however an amazing restaurant & I will post the name as soon as I remember it. Very old establishment, excellent food, & if you can, request to sit in the small dining room -its a real treat.
More to come if you're interested...

Very much interested, thank you!

I don't recall the name, but we ate in one of the hotel restaurants there and it was very good. I had Tortuga soup and it was almost as good as my Pa's. ;-)

Ok, well I absolutely recommend but you'll probably need to wait on the first few for 'normal' operations:
Kartchner Caverns (take the tour of the cave, its amazing & educational though the light show is about 5 minutes too long -lol, wear light layers because its hot in there & your not allowed to remove jackets mid tour - they'll explain why)
Restaurant in Nogales Mexico - La Ropa (Good Margaritas of course)
Titan Missile Museum (if you're into rivets & rocketry)
Pima Air & Space Museum (most is outdoors, so much to see, not just a junk yard & they have the Nasa Super Guppy, an original Marauder, helicopters, Sr71a ... just about everything else you'd hope to see. Take the time to ask the volunteers questions, they are retired military & pilots & their perspective & experience is invaluable & under appreciated imo)
Richard F. Carris /Hubble mirror lab on campus is great for getting your nerd on. (Only park in the garage structure or you will be towed!)
Kitt Peak observatory is also a wonderful afternoon/evening out. (Dress warm, even mid summer it's cold up there, pack snacks)
Then theres always these parks of which I think you've already visited a couple:
Sabino Canyon
Catalina State Park
Mt. Lemmon & Cathedral Rock Overlook
Saguaro National Park East
SNP West
Madera Canyon
Lots of hiking & biking & cycling
Also if you happen to be into model rockets (Estes, etc) & you all want to go to an approved launch site visit SARA, southern Arizona rocketry association's website. Its been a nice group of people every time we've gone, public aerospace labs are hard to come by & good for budding scientists. ;-)
All I've got off the top of my head...

All I've got off the top of my head...Thanks a bunch for the info, like you said, some things we've done, other things are on our to do list, but several I didn't know about, so much appreciated!
You aren't kidding on the biking, I actually think Tucson might be more bike friendly than the Denver Metro, probably because it's a year round sport if you can handle the heat, which several co workers claim to do. I was too impatient to wait for my bike to get here, so I bought a new one, and have been enjoying it quite a bit.

Nice pictures
Great pics, no otter way to describe them. [Coffee]
Thanks for sharing!
Otters are fun and can be good subjects if you can get close, but they don't tolerate that easily. This is one we watched on Tuesday catching trout in an ice covered lake a mile from the house. I hid behind a tree and he popped up on the ice below to roll around and preen. Got lots of pics and video. Three Bald Eagles were there to take advantage by diving at the otters but we haven't seen them successfully steal a fish. The otters gobble down the trout pretty quickly.
Last evening we were by the stream enjoying a tonic and watching dippers when we saw an otter about 15 feet away moving upstream. Difficult to see it was like a dark slinking rock flowing up and over other dark rocks. That animals like dippers can swim, survive and thrive in freezing waters is amazing.

Not a great picture. When I zoomed in, he flew away as I was trying to focus. I see one of these cardinals about every day. I've also been seeing whatever equivalent sized blue bird as well, some kind of jay I assume. The colors are striking compared to the brown I'm used to. I always notice the difference in bird song whenever I travel.

Also I like seeing the turkey vultures and possums and stuff. Almost hit a white tail at 5:30 am on my way in.
Probably a blue jay you're seeing. I can't stand possums. Greasy, nasty lookin' things. Turkey vultures are cool. Big suckers. Good hoppers getting out of the way of traffic when eating roadkill.

I started hearing about possible sightings of grizzly bears in the upper Clearwater river area of Idaho, or other evidence they were around, sometime last year. The latest sighting I'd heard about was near the small town of Kooskia.
The ex took a day trip over to Lolo, MT. On the way home she saw this somewhere east of Kooskia along Hwy 12.
https://i.imgur.com/ocUJctc.jpg
Hard to tell from that photo. Looks like a shoulder hump, but also looks like a black bear face. Color doesn't really mean anything.
ETA: If I took that picture, if probably be telling everyone I saw a grizzly.

Last week I checked the nest box on our Palisade farm house that American Kestrels have been using. Kestrels are the smallest American falcon. They typically eat mice, lizards, grasshoppers and occasionally small birds. I was surprised to find eight eggs in the box. That will be crowded in the box if they all hatch.

Kestrels have nested in this box over many years, and sometimes in a Barn Owl box ~70 yards from the house. This year like last year we have two pair of Kestrels nesting in boxes on the property. Also nesting in small wicker baskets on the house this year are Western Kingbirds and Eurasian Collared Doves.
Hummer, are there possums in Colorado? I didn't think there were, but I listened to a podcast from someone working for the state of Colorado and running hair traps and she was saying there was a lot of possum. She might have just confused what she was saying though.
Yes, there are opossums in CO.
https://www.google.com/amp/s/crittering.com/2018/08/02/the-awesome-opossum/amp/
Interesting, thanks. The podcast was about a lady checking fur traps and then being attacked by a grizzly bear. That part didn't happen in Colorado of course. Not yet anyway.
Yes, very interesting report. I didn't know the answer but thought there might be some opossum in the SE corner of the state.

That's pretty low for this time of year. Would seem the population is growing, but with wolves moving in that will likely change.

I have an S10+ and a couple of "real" cameras. I'm no photographer so the phone is just too convenient. I don't even think I've unpacked my cameras yet and the move was finalized the last week of Feb. I need to, though. That's the land of my childhood, I'm just not sure I could handle the summer's now in terms of temperature..
At our local desert museum during sunset and then a nasty storm rolls in. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200712/aa8add8aefb8c81c5b63edf8ac738b26.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200712/d3a5490b51d1290f0934dae0acdff223.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200712/4f184722fda4f69e49500f995654542f.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200712/be1e18423901d547c223ede6baef37b5.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200712/a58bd806a1ff348e7d72842a4d0e538b.jpg

Sweet!!
A male-female pair of American Three-toed Woodpeckers have been visiting the yard lately, working on beetle infested Englemann spruce trees. These are high altitude, high latitude birds in North America. They are sparsely distributed and highly sought after by birders. While most birds have four toes, three front and one back, these birds have three toes with two in front and one in back.
Here's the adult male:

The ex done gone all Naked and Afraid on me. She found a rattler sunning itself on the rock stairs from the back patio into the garden at her place in ID. Not having an appropriate gun she called a neighbor who dispatched it for her. In a moment totally out of character for her, and something she's never even considered doing, she skinned it, cleaned it and is gonna cook it for dinner tonight.
I have to admit I'm pretty impressed. Even though she was Clothed and Only Slightly Apprehensive, still an achievement for her.

Beautiful!
Thanks, the past month has involved numerous road trips with 99% of them being up to WY.
No photo, but on my drive to work this morning I watched a hawk, silhouetted against the sunrise, with a flapping fish in it's talons.
A Dusky Grouse hen and a couple older chicks visited the woodpile a few feet from the patio. Last time we saw grouse at the house was on the same date, 8-7-2017, and they fed on bird seed on the patio. Very rare.
I also watched a Long-tailed Weasel in the yard yesterday but didn't have the camera handy.

No chance for pics but was cool to see a cow elk along with nice herd of deer in the meadow north of Harmony Sporthorses on Elbert Rd. Always enjoy seeing elk on or near the plains.
Many deer, antelope and turkeys along Elbert Rd from Kiowa to Hwy 24 yesterday. Reba barked at all she saw.
Mrs bo saw her first "bloody rack" on a trophy size 5 pt buck crossing the road at Peaceful Valley.
All the animals looked very healthy.
The snow storm has brought a number of interesting birds around the house. This morning a Blue Jay joined the local Steller's Jays. We will sometimes see Blue Jay or two in May and September. Also this morning was this Band-tailed Pigeon. They are a native mountain pigeon that mostly nest in ponderosa pine and Douglas fir, and not so much in the higher elevation Englemann spruce and sub alpine fir.
The Steller's Jay in the pics is a juvenile that is in distress and not doing well. The puffed up feathers are a sign of cold and stress. It's unusual for these hardy mountain birds.

That is a snake wrapped around his leg. If you watch all the photos in a row, you see nothing the frame by frame the snake moving up it’s leg and the hawk trying to get it off. Ending the a few grams from that one the hawk ripping something off the snake and it going limp.

I can't seem to get away from these little bastards. Went out to do poop patrol in yard. Must've walked right over this little guy...didn't even see it. Maybe a half-minute later I saw two Corgis playing with something, sniffing and jumping back from whatever it was. Went to look and saw this baby rattlesnake. Rounded up dogs inside. Turned little snake into two-piece little snake and disposed of it. Checked all over yard as good as I could but didn't find others. No idea where it came from. 45 mins later no one is showing any signs/symptoms of bite. That's all I need.
And before one of you wiseasses asks...I don't where the snake got the $1 bill.

That's a Mountain Chickadee, a year around resident up to timberline. You might also see Black-capped Chickadees up to about 9000 ft. Mountain Chickadees are more in conifer, Black-capped more in deciduous. Sometimes they flock together in foraging groups. When you see them listen to their calls. Different but they both say, chick a dee, or chick a dee dee dee.
I liked them hanging around. They sounded a bit like hummers if they flew close, but didn't look like they beat their wings fast enough to sound the way they do.
Paying attention to the calls of chickadees, nuthatches and juncos can sometimes point to where elk are in the forest. When elk move in response to your presence these birds will respond with excited vocalizations. Many times chickadees have told me what direction elk are moving in the dense dark forest where it's otherwise difficult to detect them.
Pine squirrels will do this too but not as reliably for elk because squirrels are noisy much of the time in interactions with other squirrels.
What birds were you telling me that will haze elk in groups? Groups of birds, not groups of elk.
It can be whatever is in the area at the time of the disturbance. In fall they'd mostly be the permanent residents like chickadees, nuthatches, juncos, woodpeckers, finches, and the corvids like jays, nutcrackers, magpies and crows. It's the excited, up tempo calling you want to listen for. It can also pinpoint the presence of predators being mobbed by the birds to get them to move on out of their territory. The mobbing can reveal predatory hawks, owls, weasels, pine martens, etc.

Kind of a back story here...
Sandhill cranes are migrating thru OK to TX and further south. A whole herd of 'em happened to stop in a field just outside of my little town. I noticed them while on the way home from town. Ran home and grabbed the camera. Drove back, parked a ways away, and slowly got near enough to take some good shots of the birds in this cotton field. Just trying to frame the shot when "honk, honk". Some local bubba pulls up, honks his horn and yells out, "There's a whole bunch of 'em just up the road." Naturally, they all scattered quite a ways away into the middle of the field where I couldn't get to them. Thanks for the tip, dumbass. What I get for not taking the moron magnets outta my pocket.
This one is at the max zoom on the FZ1000 lens. Don't even have a clue how far. Also cropped/enlarged to about twice the size I guess. I'll keep my eyes out, though, now that I know their stopover spot.
