I didn't see a thread devoted to wildlife so thought I'd start one.

We have at least one pair of Great Horned Owls that live on our property. Their two offspring are constantly buzzing around. Haven't got a chance to get any pictures yet but working on it. What I did get is the remnants of their dinner. I didn't know what these were but a little time on Google learned me. They're owl pellets. The owl eats little animals whole - bone, skin, fur, everything. They digest what they can and regurgitate the rest in the form of these pellets. These are mostly from a rabbit that was a little slower than the others. For those of you like me, who were ignorant of this sort of thing, I thought it was interesting. I found these at the base of a Ponderosa tree where I've seen the owls perched (Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pellet_%28ornithology%29)):

This guy meets me at work almost every morning. He hangs out and will actually follow me around. He'll let me get within 5 or 6 feet before he hops away. Often I'll be working on a tank or something and I'll turn around and there he is...as if he's very intrigued by what I'm doing.

Nice! You can tell a lot about the kind of raptor and what it eats by the size and contents of the pellet. There are people who specialize in analyzing pellets and reconstructing the skeletons of the prey. Great Horned Owl pellets are pretty large, ~2.5--5 inches. I've found pheasant feet and woodrat tails in GHOW pellets.

Recently, I found some medium sized pellets in our wildlife shelter belt. They were likely from either a Cooper's Hawk or a Long-eared Owl, both similar sized birds that had been roosting in those trees.

Small owl pellets are also recognizable. Here are some from a Northern Saw-whet Owl averaging 5/8 to 7/8 inches. I just collected a bunch from the slightly larger Western Screech-owl that measure about 3/4 to 1 1/8 inches. They contain tiny bones of mice, shrews, lizards and grasshopper parts. I frequently see owls and falcons regurgitating pellets, usually one or two pellets per day. It's a major upchuck for them.

Elk butts, you gotta love 'em. They stand out like flags at 70 yards in thick shrubs and timber, and also at two miles from a distant mountain. And look at those remnant tusks on that spike bull! They are the ivories or bugler teeth prized for jewelry and tools.

Last evening right after dark we went to look for activity at one of the owl boxes in our yard. Here are some photos I snapped. The first is an adult Western Screech-owl bringing food to young at the nest. It looks like a caterpillar or maybe the chrysalis of a moth or butterfly. The four young were softly calling, begging for food from inside the box. There are two photos of an adult leaving the box after feeding the young. This morning I confirmed there are four owl chicks in the box. The male screech-owl was roosting in another box nearby where starlings had been nesting. I suspect the owls fed the starling chicks to their young.

Then I checked the Barn Owl box where American Kestrels are nesting. Kestrels are the smallest American falcon, and the most common. I snapped a quick shot of the male falcon as he hurtled toward me in a dive when I stood 16 feet up on an orchard ladder. Then I took a brief look inside to find three chicks. Fun stuff.

We had a kestrel nest in the rain gutter of the town house we rented when we lived in Aurora, about four feet to the left of our window. There was so much noise from the nest that I thought for sure there had to be at least four chicks, so imagine my surprise when I was finally able to see that there was only one rambunctious baby! I called him 'Legion' and enjoyed watching him grow up into an adult.

Those of you that have access to owl pellets may be interested to know there is a market for these items. Many high schools and colleges dissect them i biology class, and there is also a niche market for jewelry (mostly earrings) made from the delicate skeletal remains. You'd need to sterilize them first (and that consists of wrapping the pellet in heavy aluminum foil, and placing them in a 325 degree pre-heated oven for 40 minutes, to kill any E. Coli bacteria. If you look on eBay, you'll see that sterilized owl pellets go for $2.00+ each.

Bailey Guns, that's a beautiful shot of a great bird, the California Quail. Keep up the good work. I've seen them in Idaho and California. The scale pattern on their belly and nape is more ornate than our western slope Gambel's Quail. Here's a pic for comparison. There's one calling right outside the door right now. We're able to see them up close when they come to a tray feeder two feet from the dining room window.

People who live in natural wildland areas like your new place have a great opportunity to see and learn about wildlife. It makes for a rich life. Most city folks never know what they're missing.

Mrs BG spotted this guy today. I had to do some serious acrobatics on the side of hill to get this. I had to climb to a pretty precarious position to get the angle for the photo because he was positioned behind the pine needles and couldn't be clearly seen from any other vantage point. I was about 100 feet away and he was still pretty pissed that I was stalking him. I have to say I love this new camera. It's the best look we've had yet of one of the Great Horned Owls that live on our property:

1 or 2 owls around here have decided to use one of our gutters as their litter box. Every so often, the spouse pulls a rodent skeleton out of it. Lady down the street took them to her students.

Bailey Guns, those are beautiful images of the Great Horned! As you probably know it's a juvenile (hasn't got it's horns on yet).

Badgers are neat critters. I don't see them often. One time I was able to call one to me by mimicking a squeaking mouse or bird. We had one on our farm a few years ago. I think it was working the small prairie dog colony on the property. Pdog numbers crashed about that time.

Here's my contribution today, a recently fledged Northern Saw-whet Owl. It was rescued from an attacking raven by a fellow who brought it in to the office. I determined it was okay and we took him back to the mountains to release him in the same location. The young might make it on his own but would do better reunited with his parents who will continue to feed it for month or so.

Didn't know for sure but suspected. Yesterday the two adults and one of the juveniles were hanging out in a ponderosa near the house right around dark. Not sure what they were doing but they were talking up a storm. One of them yacked up a fresh pellet which we quickly retrieved from the ground after they left. I never thought I'd be digging thru the grass after dark looking for bird vomit.

Love the badger, too. I've seen one in the area...playing chicken with me on the road. He really didn't want to move. I hope he wised up a bit or his life expectancy will be short.

Walking down to water the garden I surprised this guy. He was ready to tangle with me and my Terrier. Needless to say the dog wanted a piece of the owl, too. Getting the pictures while trying to control the dog was a little tricky. We backed off and everyone calmed down. The GHO waited long enough to make sure we weren't a threat and flew up into a nearby tree. It's one of the juveniles...I think the one I got the pics of several days ago. I'm guessing he's about 1.5 times as tall as one of the railroad ties he's perched on. Wingspan is probably around 2', maybe a little more.

Great little bird, BG! You don't need (or want) barn cats when you have resident owls. They'll take mice, pack rats, skunks and other unwanted pests including feral cats.

Here's an adult Swainson's Hawk I caught today. It has a wing injury and is unable to fly. I had to chase him down and he almost outran me. This species migrates to South America for winter, often in large groups of Swainson's. He's probably been to Argentina and back at least once. With luck the vet will be able to repair the wing. It's a beautiful bird!

Really enjoying the photos you guys are posting in this thread.

I don't know much about killdeer except the little I've read about on Wiki. Sometimes they nest, if you can call it a nest, in open, rocky areas. Well, my tank yard at work is certainly open and rocky. This little bird decided to lay her egg (eggs...the day after this was taken there were two) right on the edge of the drive where the tankers come in to reload our bulk tank. Very dangerous spot. The first photo was taken fairly early...maybe 0730 when I saw her frantically running about the yard. I'm thinking she was looking for a place to lay her egg. The other two were taken mid-afternoon when it was about 103 degrees. She was panting a lot. I didn't know birds panted, either.

Great pics! Killdeer are fascinating little birds. Wait until you see her doing her broken-wing dance to keep you away from her nest.

If it keeps getting that hot, you may want to set out a little dish of water for her. My grandma used to set out the drain pan of a flower pot for the killdeer.

Their babies are some of the cutest little birds you've ever seen. Any way to maybe set some cones out around her nest so the tankers don't run her over?

Yeah, I thought about the water, even though we're only two or three hundred yards from the Snake River she obviously gets very hot on those rocks. And I've placed some blocks around her nest on the edge of the drive in hopes of encouraging the tanker drivers to make a wider turn. I'm really hoping to see the babies. I haven't seen her "Oh, no...look at me. I'm hurt!" dance yet but I'd like to.

A little back story. The other day I came home and my daughter ran up to me with a jar saying something about having caught a LadyBug. Since this is about the 50th Ladybug she's told me about, I didn't pay much attention until I actually looked. She actually had about 20 Ladybugs in the jar, and they were laying eggs. You could actually see them laying eggs directly onto the jar. I thought that was pretty cool. I guess the kids stumbled across a whole nest of them, hatching on a tree in our front yard, and they just stood there and caught them all. Anyway, today she was pointing out another Ladybug laying eggs on our house. There were several other areas full of eggs as well.

2008 before I realized mom carried babies. Showing off for the minions, I coaxed one slightly larger than that one off of a board and onto my hand. When I slowly lowered my hand for the grand kids to see one of them let out a shriek and I flinched. Momma spider deposited hundreds of babies on my hand and arm. Did a little shrieking of my own.

We still laugh about it. Stills gives me heebie jeebies when I think about it. I don't pick up spiders any more.

Spiders cost me close to $1,200 this year in vet bills so F them. Spiders, snakes and crows are the only real thing I kill for just the sheer enjoyment.

Spiders don't bother me much...except black widows. Those I'll kill. Others I try to leave alone. It's amazing how many insects they kill here.

This area is also known for rattlesnakes. I saw the first one yesterday. It had been run over and killed on the little side road we live on. I'm really worried about the dogs getting bit. The little blue healer pup has had the vaccine but not the other 3.

Somebody help me identify this little guy. A youngun, about the size of a Robin, just sitting/sleeping on a stack of pallets. He let me get very close before reacting. Not sure if he was hurt, ill or just too young to fly away.

I thought it was a young Osprey chick but now not so sure after looking at some photos.

Anybody know for sure?

UPS driver told me a rabbit got tagged in the driveway maybe 2 months ago. I took a few pics and later confirmed it was an Osprey (seahawk). Apparently they've been brought in for pigeon control.

In the circle of life, there's a baby bunny now in the territory the old one was in. (that my dog didn't eat yet)

Nighthawk

Yes, it's a Common Nighthawk, an adult. Beautiful photo of a great bird, BG!

Nighthawks aren't hawks but are insectivores related to swifts. They nap during mid day and fly at dawn and dusk and some after dark. The best mosquito control! I sometimes find them roosting on fences, on the ground or on a graveled road. They're often approachable because they are confident in their camouflage. In the evenings we watch them swoop low around the yard and over the farm along with swifts and swallows. Nighthawks show off their graceful flight with a 24" wingspan and large white patches on the slender wing.

A similar bird, smaller and less common is the Common Poorwill. Sometimes you can spot them in flocks of nighthawks. Here's one I photographed sleeping on the ground in our yard. They can be easily overlooked because of their cryptic camo plumage.

Here's a fun one today, Western Kingbirds have a nest just outside my office window ~3 feet from my computer desk. I attached a wicker basket to the gutter downspout so the birds would use this protected site rather than in our open gutters. Our swamp coolers automatically flush water into the gutters which damages the bird's nest causing their brood to fail. The shaded basket nest protects from overheating and predatory ravens and magpies.

The Western Kingbirds just hatched young in the past 2-3 days. We can't see them yet, probably 4 or 5 young, would have to use a ladder 14 feet up.

I have three basket nests on the house, the other two have been used by doves this year.

Western Kingbirds are tyrant flycatchers in the genus Tyrannus. They are insectivores that aggressively defend their territories with raucous, angry vocalizations. They have a gray head and back, bright yellow underparts and white outer tail feathers. They are widespread in the dry lowlands throughout Colorado.

We like kingbirds and are happy to rent them the space.

A lot of people don't like the ground squirrels. We had quite a few around the house in Bailey. Haven't seen any here...most likely due to the heavy raptor population. I miss them. They were almost like pets.

We have always just called them sand turtles because they prefer they sandy type soils(CRC soils) vs the the other option on the prairie(clay). We have a couple that hang out around my shop where we hauled in sandy soil and see them on the dirt roads regularly, unfortunately often flat. They make great yard ornaments when you can get them to stick around.

I've only ever seen the painted turtles here, and rarely at that. I had no idea we have snapping turtles here. We also have soft shelled turtles as well, according to the research paper I was reading when looking for info on that Ornate Box Turtle above.

Have one of their nests on one of our butt/pass corners. Must be eggs in it now. They are much more aggressive the last week or so when I go out on deck.

A group of Band-tailed Pigeons visited the tray feeder at the cabin today. Band-tailed Pigeons are a Colorado native that live in mountains and generally breeds in the Ponderosa Pine and Douglas Fir forest. Here they have moved up into the Englemann Spruce and Subalpine Fir at 8500'. They are not often seen in the flatlands. Nice birds, shy and somewhat skittish. Their primary predators are Goshawk and Cooper's Hawk.

The male Hairy Woodpecker has found our hummingbird feeders again. They've become adept at popping the yellow flowers off to open the port so they can get their tongue into the sugar water. It's kind of comical, woodpeckers are cool characters.

Other birds besides hummers that will take sugar water include Downy Woodpecker, Red-naped Sapsucker, Western Tanager, Chickadees and more....

Why do most hummingbird feeders have a landing spot? I've never seen a hummingbird land to feed from flowers.

Hummingbirds feed from a perch whenever they can because it's energy efficient. They will drink from a flower using any perch such as an adjacent branch, the plant stalk or the flower petal itself. But most hummingbird flowers are small and don't have nearby branches or big petals for a hummer to perch on so most folks don't see it very often. (I see it every day because we have a lot of hummingbirds). A good hummer flower is one that gives them a chance to relax while they eat high calorie nectar and insect rich food. They are well adapted to hover to feed but smart enough to conserve energy when they can.

Feeders are made with perches because that's what hummingbirds prefer--they can consume more food energy in a shorter time using less energy. Also, because feeder watchers can better view the birds using feeders with perches. A bird that's stationary is easier to see in detail than one that is hovering and moving constantly.

Here's a juvie male Black-chinned in our garden perching on a Mexican Sunflower petal to take nectar and insects. A natural feeder perch.

Thanks for the info. We have lots of hummingbirds in this area, but most of their food sources are very small flowers. We have at least two that visit us several times a day and our kids love watching them buzz around. Sometimes they get very close to us and I always instruct HB Jr to stay very still when they do. Last week, one hovered about 2 ft in front of his face for 10-15 seconds while it appeared to check him out. He loved it!

In 2012, when I lived in this same area in CA for a few months, I took a few pretty good pictures in an area just outside my apartment. I'll see if I can dig them up.

Wife got a few decent cell phone pictures of pelicans at Barr Lake the other day. Pretty fun watching all the different birds flying around. A couple times several hundred birds would fly back and forth across the lake all at once. Took more than a minute each time for them all to fly past.

It's not normal but bill injuries are somewhat common in hummingbirds. This bird's lower mandible is offset and curved upward, preventing the tongue from correctly laying in the channel. It's probably due to a collision, possibly with a window or screen.

Mrs. BG is probably right about it being a Broad-tailed, and it appears to be a juvenile female. Another photo might provide more information. Rufous and Calliope hummingbirds are migrating through now, too.

Here's one of our many yard bunnies, a desert subspecies of the Nuttall's Cottontail, eating wormwood. The lower leaves on this plant have been eaten off so bunny has to reach. Another popular plant we have in the yard is winterfat, so named because it is used by deer, rabbits and other animals through the winter.

Our rabbit numbers have dropped recently. Last evening we spotted a Long-eared Owl in the yard and suspect it has been feasting in the rabbit garden.

My mom has had some hawks around her place the last few days. She first saw it when it landed on the porch while she was outside reading and the cat was sitting in the sun. She said the wingspan was the same as hers.
The next day my brother sent photos of one hawk carrying a rabbit and dropping it onto the neighbor's roof where the two hawks shared it together. She sent me these pictures today. Mom is frustrated because the cat hangs outside a lot and is one of those cats that kills mice and stuff in the yard. So, the hawk is interested in the cat, as is evidenced by showing up while my mom was on the porch, but the cat is also interested in the hawk because she doesn't know any better. I guess it's a Red Tail hawk.

I'm amazed at the constant parade of flying insects that have been attracted by our garden. I only have a few decent shots of them, but I've definitely seen stuff I've never seen before.

I took this one today and didn't get as close as I'd have liked. This guy appears to be an all black bee. If you can zoom in on any of these, you get a better view.

Found this guy on the back patio tonight. He's about 5" long. I'm not sure why they come up near the house at night...maybe for the warmth? But they leave giant turds. We thought it was raccoon scat but turns out it's the toads.

The wildlife here is completely different from what were accustomed to in the CO mountains...but it's way cool all the same. The crickets at night are deafening sometimes.

Nice photo, that's a Woodhouse's Toad, identified by the whitish line down the spine. We get them in the gardens around the house, and one big fat mama that hangs out at the back garage door to catch bugs under the light at night. Gentle bug eaters we try to protect along with tiger salamanders.

Thanks for the toad info. They must taste awful. When our little heeler was new to the place he picked one up in his mouth and promptly spit it out before rubbing his face on the dirt for about 5 mins. He saw that one the other night and wouldn't go near it.

Those hummer pics are fantastic. We need to put a water feature out for ours apparently. Looks like they enjoy that. I'm sure they do a lot of that in the creek that runs thru the property.

Most toads and some frogs have secretions that taste awful. Some are also poisonous if ingested.

bonefish in shallow water, which is their usual habitat when not spawning -

I've seen some of your pictures like this before, and always wondered how one gets a picture like this. Seems like fish don't hold still and you can't see what you're shooting. Is it just luck through volume?

In deep/er water, you can approach fish slowly and get very close, often within several inches depending on species and their breathing requirements (tuna have to keep moving, barracuda can sit completely still, etc). When it comes to bonefish or permit in water that is less than a foot deep, photos are typically either via a remote camera that is planted on the bottom and triggered remotely, or the photos are made while the fish is still hooked. The bonefish photo I posted above from a few weeks ago was still hooked and I simply held the leader with my left hand while aiming the camera with my right hand. Light fluorocarbon fishing leader material essentially disappears underwater so it doesn't vividly show up in most photos. Fish will naturally point into current so you just let them 'tread water' in the current and snap away.

I might not have thought anything of this particularly fancy bird crap I saw the other day, if it weren't for the owl poop discussion earlier. This looks to be mostly bug exoskeletons. At one point I accidentally knocked this loose and it rolled down the roof and broke apart. Prettiest poop I've ever seen.

LOL! We thought the dragonfly was dead/frozen, as he was tucked away in the fabric shown in the photo, when I went to pull his "tail" out, he started moving (albeit very slowly). I'm certain this little guy was nearing the end of his days, but he allowed for a good shot. All of the wildlife including the bird were really slow, I guess everything is about ready to freeze over.

How the HELL did you catch hummingbirds???

Verrry carefully, with mist nets and traps around flowers and feeders in the gardens. And, with the appropriate federal and state research permits. We have banded 12K+ hummingbirds of 12 species in six states and have discovered new aspects of hummingbird biology, added two new species to the CO state list and might soon tally the 500th species to the official list of Colorado birds. High drama in the ornithology world.

They are amazing animals, like us in so many ways and with most of the same organs. But proportionate to their size, hummingbirds have the largest brain, heart, lungs, breast muscles, kidneys and liver of any animal on earth. They've fascinated me since childhood.

A 4-gram hummingbird has a basic metabolic rate of 1,400 calories per kilogram. If a man had as high a weight-specific metabolic rate his daily intake of food would be about twice his body weight. Also, his temperature would be over 750 degrees Fahrenheit and he would use up to 155,000 calories per day. If a hummer weighed as much as us, we would be a tender little morsel for them.

Another wildlife rescue today, of a young Great Horned Owl on the ground and unable to fly. It was pretty seriously injured, possibly from a night time collision with the wire fence in the background. Powerlines and wire fences take a toll on raptors, especially night flying owls. It was taken to the wildlife vet with hope for a recovery.

I asked one of the rangers I ran into about it, and the explanation I got was basically they're big and stubborn and if one of the lead animals gets the idea it wants to be somewhere, they'll all get there. They're neat animals, but you can really see how a bunch of motivated people with rifles could do the damage they did to the wild population.

Also not really wildlife, but I posted these in the other thread. Zion is just as cool.

Sure are. The full-res photos are much better, just a pain to host them and maintain the resolution and still have them usable in a forum. The pictures are neat, but obviously the real thing is better. Anybody who gets the chance to go to Zion in Utah should absolutely go for it.

Wow! I'm envious of the work you do.

It is gratifying to be able to help animals, but also sad and tragic when they're so injured that they have little chance to survive even with good veterinary care. Like the Great Horned Owl pictured above, this Barn Owl had apparently hit a fence at night. Unfortunately, these things happen beyond anyone's control but they are significant impacts on wildlife due to human development. Sometimes all you have left is to educate people about how to minimize risks to wildlife, and to know when not to interfere and instead let nature take it's course.

Driving home from the Millsite this evening I spotted a bull moose move into the aspens. I don't see bulls very often so I stopped hoping to get a view. There was a cow with him, and Bullwinkle was intently focused on sniffing out her love canal. It must be getting close to the moose rut. I thought he might get lucky.

It was getting dark and I was shooting handheld so the pics are disappointing, but you get the idea. Sure is fun watching those huge majestic animals.

This evening I walked along the driveway and heard some noise in the timber across the highway. A big bull moose walked across the road and toward me, then down the driveway and through the yard. It was getting dark at 6:45 p.m., but I got some quick images courtesy of the flash and photoshop. Another younger bull followed him down through the yard. Always exciting!

They smell funny, a distinctively different pungent character than elk, deer or antelope.

Nice, but I'm more interested in that Toyota pickup! 85?

Nice, but I'm more interested in that Toyota pickup! 85?

Yes, an '85 SR5 Xtra Cab with a fiberglass cap and Meyers Two Meter snow plow. Five speed, cruise control, electric windows, air conditioning and an openable skylight. Starts easily and runs smoothly at 269,900 miles on the original engine. Well, until the starter crapped out a year ago. I just put a new starter-solenoid on. Starts much faster now and I think the battery drain issue is solved. The 1985 was the first year for the Toyota EFI, and the last year for the front leaf springs. Best of both worlds for a snow plow rig. I put an extra leaf in the springs all around to toughen it up for snow plowing. The old Toys were the best snow plow trucks in the business for most private and small business applications.

I bought the plow new for my 1980 SR5, then later transferred it to the '85, which I got for $700. Best investment ever.

Do you have one?

Thanks for the rundown, sweet rig indeed. The 85's were definitely the best year, for the reasons you mentioned. My buddy in high school had an 85, awesome truck. I had an 86 4runner that was awesome, good 22RE motor, but first year of the independent front suspension. I'd love to get another old Toy someday, maybe just for a back and forth to work truck. My brother has a 1980 Toyota 4x4 I'm trying to talk him out of, but it's not going well lol.

Sorry for the derail.

My friend has an '88 SR5 like mine but in better condition all around. He needs a plow for it, but is still pushing a snow blower to clear his 250 yd. driveway. Helps to have both options when you live in snow country.

The obligatory wildlife pic, a cow moose gnawing on aspen in the yard:

Little background:

About 900' of Cottonwood Creek runs thru our property. The house sits about 20' feet or so above the creek bed. It tends to flow very heavily in the spring during the rainy season. Earlier this year we were outside and heard the crash of a large tree falling somewhere in the creek bed. The undergrowth was already heavy and the creek was flowing too hard to get down there to see what it was. We assumed it was a weakened or dead tree falling due to the water flow.

About a month or 6 weeks ago we noticed a tree appeared to have fallen. Probably wouldn't have noticed but it made a clear spot where the road was visible. A few other trees nearby appeared to be dying. At that time the summer growth was in full swing...so were rattlesnakes. So we couldn't get down there to investigate. I did take a look at a downed tree thru the binos and told Mrs BG it looked like it had been felled by a beaver. Couldn't really tell for sure, though.

Last night the power went out. We thought we heard a crash but weren't sure. This morning, the line on the power pole in our front yard was dislodged from the insulator. The energy from the line literally splintered the 6"x6"x8' crossmember that separates the lines. Apparently the little bastards dropped another tree that hit the lines causing them to break free from the insulator.

We took a little walk along the creek this morning and found the problem. Beavers. They've felled 2 or 3 dozen trees down there. At least 2 dams. A pretty impressive pond is beginning to form, too. And that's just what we can see. I can't really tell the extent of the problem but we're gonna have to do something to relocate them. I'll have to look into the best options.

All of this has been accomplished by them since March. There was no sign of them then.

Pretty good sized cottonwood:

Productive day today. First we went hiking up in Curt Gowdy State Park just West of Cheyenne. We hiked up the Crow Creek trail to the Hidden Falls. There were what looked like some Brook Trout swimming around, and a Rainbow that was sick enough to let me catch him.

Then when we got home, I let the dog out in the backyard to do her business (she won't go anywhere but at home) and she was barking on the side of the house. I went over there and she was scratching at the fence and I looked over and saw this handsome fellow. Surprised I was able to get the dog to come back in before she got sprayed again.

Yesterday, I was driving back from pronghorn hunting in northwest Colorado, up the Williams Fork and over Ripple Creek Pass in a snowstorm, then over the Buford Road on the Flat Tops Plateau. Beautiful drive as always, and the slick muddy roads impressed upon me the need to get new tires and shocks on the truck before winter. I took a few photos along the way......

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g292/COHummer/Special%20Places/Sage-country%2010-1-16-_zpsoc2c1cup.jpg

I hunted yesterday (Monday) morning hoping to get a shot at a nice buck I'd seen Sat. and Sun. It was the only pronghorn I saw in 3 days on the patch of public land I was hunting. Didn't spot a pronghorn within miles, even on surrounding private lands. Lots of deer though, and many nice bucks. Then a thunderstorm came in with lightning and heavy rain. Was two miles in on foot and got out of there just in time. The roads turned to mucky clay that so packed the wheel wells of another hunter's vehicle that it couldn't move forward. I helped dig out the wheel wells and got him out onto better graveled road. Then the snow started in.

They often snort when they get nervous. Usually if they see you but can't smell you, or vise versa - can't make out what you are.

He's been here intermittently since, feeding on flowers, feeders and the abundant fruit flies. Just before and during migration hummers build fat nearly doubling their weight which helps them in the long flight to Mexico for the winter. Note the tiny head on the big body appearance which is very different from a breeding season hummingbird. This guy is bulging with fat around the neck, belly and back. Haven't seen him this morning, maybe he's moved on....

Yesterday, my friend Kate in Cordova, Alaska, discovered an Anna's Hummingbird coming to her feeder during a snowstorm. If she's able to catch and document it today, it will be the first banding record of an Anna's Hummingbird in southcentral AK.

Great photos of wonderful scenes. Looks like many lakes I've been to along the divide from the Indian Peaks to the Rawahs. Where were these taken?

Did you dip a line in?

The first one you quoted is Lock Vale, and second is Sky Pond, both in the Rocky Mountain National Park. It's a really fun hike, strenuous but only a nine mile round trip. I don't fish at the moment.

Found this guy in someone else's garden, brought it home for the kid, and we let it go in our garden. We found him again a few days later as well, so hopefully he survived the cold snaps and will get to turn into an Eagle or whatever something of this size turns into. This thing takes dumps big enough that the second time we found it, we tracked him like an elk and followed his droppings.

I see these huge bees once every couple of years, usually in the mountains. What kind of bee is this monster? If ever there was a bee that the whole "Bees shouldn't be able to fly" theory applied to, it'd be this guy. EDIT: Looks like it might be an Orange Belted Bumble-Bee.

Their stingers tear off in you and some gland keeps pumping venom when you get stung, I swell like a tomato. Ask me how I know.

Irving
10-18-2016, 17:53
The thing I read said that their stingers are not barbed, so it doesn't pull off and they can sting you multiple times.

I find that bees generally mind their own business though. I was practically touching this one to get a decent shot of him.

The judges have selected the best works from over 2,000 submissions.

The organizers of the international contest, the Сomedy Wildlife Photography Awards, selected 40 best photographs submitted by participants in 2016, Design You Trust writes.

The winner whose name will be announced by the end of October will receive photography equipment from Nikon and a chance to join a one-week safari in Kenya.

Here are the 19 finalist -

Don't think I ever posted any of my hunting pictures (except for the animals). Sorry in advance for cell phone photos.

We all saw this cloud at about the same time and briefly wondered if Colorado Springs had been nuked while we were out hunting. This is also the same meadow where we spotted the herd. Having never seen more than a handful of elk together in my life, and only an occasional lone spike while hunting, this was pretty exciting. We practically ran up the hill after them. *There are no elk in this photo, we saw them later in the week.

I thought for sure this was a black bear, and it immediately got my heart pounding. You don't often see black in nature. I had also hiked out further than ever before and was in a relatively new territory. I was nervous that I was going to get the bear I wanted so badly, but have a hard time finding it again. Turns out it was just a charred log and I wasn't that far from familiar territory.

We all start somewhere. Five years ago my uncle invited me to hunt with him and I said Heck Yeah and ran out and bought a Savage in .308. Then three years ago when we finally drew tags, he told me, again, "I told you this is muzzleloader season, you bought the wrong gun." So I had to run out and buy a muzzleloader and learn to use it in the few months before my first ever hunting trip. Muzzleloader season is mid-September by the way.

Glass bottle got carried out in tact. We also brought out an old Budweiser can and an old Pepsi can. The Pepsi can was in a draw that allowed it to be in the shade most of the time and aged very well. I'll go snap a picture of it real quick.

This thread has given me a brand new appreciation for birds, which I previously cared very little about. Now Crows are one of my favorite animal, and I just heard about this today on the radio.
Check out this article about common swifts. Make sure you read the very last line of the article, even though it's not about Swifts.

http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2016/10/27/499635084/this-bird-can-remain-airborne-for-10-months-straight

Scientists have long suspected that the common swift remains airborne for extraordinary amounts of time during its annual migration. Now, a team of scientists in Sweden has proved that these birds fly for tremendously long periods of time. They affixed data loggers onto a total of 19 of the master fliers in 2013 and 2014, and recaptured the birds months or years later. Researchers found that the birds can spend almost their entire 10-month nonbreeding period on the wing.

Photographed at a hundred yards from my home office window. Not a great pic but interesting that a local resident Red-tailed Hawk sometimes hangs out on a Barn Owl box in the yard. The box is 16 ft. off the ground. Falcons have nested in the box the past few years but they don't appear to be roosting in it at night now. When we butchered elk a few weeks ago we put the scraps out by the owl box and the Red-tail took advantage of it. Normally the Red-tails perch on power poles another hundred yards out watching for prairie dogs but the abundant rabbits may have brought the hawk in closer. The Grand Mesa is in the background.

Nice picture of the hawk.

The bald eagles are out in force this year. Passed a tree near the house yesterday where we normally see one or two and there were seven...5 adults and 3 juveniles. I've seen at least 2 or 3 somewhere along the river every day for the past two weeks. Naturally they're someplace where I can't stop and get a picture.

Every year I hang the butchered out backbone/rib sections of elk or other big game so the birds can share in the feast. A surprisingly wide variety of birds line up to take advantage of the fat, meat and marrow and the carcass is usually picked clean in 30-60 days. Some of the birds I've observed include Black-capped and Mountain Chickadee, Juniper Titmouse, Ruby-crowned and Golden-crowned Kinglet, Audubon's and Wilson's Warbler, White-crowned, Fox and Harris's Sparrow, Dark-eyed Junco, Downy and Hairy Woodpecker, Northern Flicker, Steller's and Woodhouse's Scrub Jay, Black-billed Magpie, Common Raven, and American Crow. Always fun watching....

A lot of Bald Eagles fly south to winter here now. When we travel I-70 to the Front Range we make a game of how many Eagles we can spot while driving. It's not unusual to spot a dozen or more birds along the Colorado and Eagle Rivers.

The Christmas Bird Count is held all around the country in 15 mile diameter count circles to survey bird populations. I do the owl count portion of the CBC and here we specifically look to tally Western Screech-owls. From about 5:30-7:15 this morning I made 11 stops and called in 5 owls using recorded Western Screech-owl calls. Sometimes two owls will come in and it's fun to watch their interactions.

When I got home I put out some cracked corn and bird seed for the bunnies and the Gambel's Quail.
