Didn't his mom say the police "got the right guy" as in, she knew he'd lost it? Clearly she, and likely many others knew that he was off the wall, or getting close.... same thing with the Loughner fellow in AZ. We really need to get better mental health services in this country, for our ailing servicemen, as well as the distressed citizen. While I understand your reasoning, this would be effectively a police-state, and I don't think that's what any Americans truly want in our country... having police presence and first responder services will always be critical, but expecting to have the public-paid resources at every possible event such as this, is not realistic without drastic economic impact. Words can't even express what I'm feeling right now. It's truly a horrible event that took place and my prayers go out to all the victims hurt, be it physically or emotionally. This will scar people for many years to come.

CCW would have probably been less effective than we would hope. The guy was armored and used smoke and /or tear gas. Combine that with confusion, there would be a high likelihood of hitting a bystander.

Folks, with the reporting that an AR was used by this very deranged individual, at a theater, in CO, you must all realize that this site WILL be drawing an increased number of "guests" for a while.

You can imagine that many of these guests will be part of the Anti Firearm community looking for anything they can to use against our freedom.

I beg you all to heed KevDen2005's suggestion in another thread to watch everything you post to ensure it can't be used to further their agenda.

We ALL agree that this is a very tragic situation. Let's pause to reflect on this situation. If you are inclined to praying, do this. While I understand your reasoning, this would be effectively a police-state, and I don't think that's what any Americans truly want in our country... having police presence and first responder services will always be critical, but expecting to have the public-paid resources at every possible event such as this, is not realistic without drastic economic impact. As sad and unfortunate as this shooting (any shooting!) is, it simply cannot be anyone elses responsibility to keep me and my family safe, than my own.

That theater regularly hires about 5 officers for off duty work...Why they weren't there last night would only be because the theater didn't want to hire them

I expect most, if not all, would be assigned in the lobby and entrance area to watch for people acting in an unusual/suspicious manner. Sounds like this guy came in through a back door that was blocked open. Just my speculation, thou...

I find it interesting/odd that when I was at this theater last week on a Tuesday night, there were about 6 cops hanging out in the lobby. I wasn't sure if it was for a call, because they were really loitering.

I'm not saying they should have been there, I'm sure they have better things to do than babysit a movie theater.

You're in a Movie theater, all you can do is sit there, or try to make a run past the mad man with a rifle, all the while gas or smoke is going around. Even if you had a CCW you're boned. Normally I'd say I'd fight back somehow, someway, but we weren't there so none of us know the conditions is that dark, smokey theater, packed with sitting ducks.

I thought the same thing. I don't know the theater, but of all the ones I have been in, they have all been metal doors typically for wear/tear, and I assume fire code. Just goes to show the media just starts yapping/typing without reserve.

Code states that the egress doors must swing in the direction of egress and you are correct in assuming that it would be a steel door - no way he was able to "kick it in". Some had to have let him in...

I completely agree. The shooter very well could have realized that eventually someone would open the door. And when they opened the door and saw him in his gear and armed no one (or very few people) are going to slam the door, they are going to retreat and provide the shooter entry into the theater.

I did a shooter scenario very similar to this in the police academy. Very hard to see in the dark without a light. I wish people didn't suck but they do. Hope and prayers to the families ..... those are exact words from the police chief. Could be full auto illegal conversion. this guy planned this whole thing out, so you never know if he did some research and made it auto.


some have said it was a .22 but an ER doctor said it was consistent with a high powered rifle.
