I do it a little different. I juice for break and lunch and have a salad with meat for dinner ie ham cubes, chicken chunks etc nothing big but solid. Went straight Juice on Tues and have not had the cravings I guess because I weaned off solids.

Don't know that it will, but this isn't a forever thing. Just a "fast" to knock off as much as possible in a couple of months and adjust to not eating solid stuff, so that you can "start over" with a different mindset about what solid food to eat. At least that's MY approach and attitude.
Trust me, I'm an eatin' sumbitch. There's not many things that I WON'T eat. But while I'm stuffing it in my yap I'll tell myself how bad and unhealthy it is for me, yet still eat it. My tastebuds and stomach work great. I'm doing this to feel better, lose weight, and change my attitude about fatty meats, wheat & flour products, cereals, ice cream & dairy/cheeses, candy, sugars of all kinds, etc.
I'm finding that if I get hungry and start craving, a load of juice and some water will calm it down. Do I like it? Not particularly. Is it a PITA? Yes. But I'm on Day 6 and down 12 pounds?! That's unheard of! That gives me the incentive to keep going and see what's next, just how far I can go, and how much I can lose. I can already tell/ feel a difference, and I think I'm still just detoxing.
What pushed me into this was I blew out my favorite shorts, wore 'em out until they ripped. I had a new pair just like them in reserve, same size. But they were just a tad smaller, and they wouldn't fit. I went to Penny's for a size larger, and I was at the max size they carry, corporate-wide. No bigger than what I already couldn't fit into. I was faced with spending bug bucks at Omar The Tentmakers' just for a pair of fucking shorts.
Then Jer started this thread, I watched FS&ND, found a juicer at Goodwill, and here I are. Oh, the shorts fit fine now!
Jer started this thread about a week prior to my wife (who is an outstanding cook) left town for a month. It might prove too difficult with her kitchen skills but she's gone and I'm up for a challenge so I jumped on the bandwagon. However..... those containers of cashews & almonds on the shelf, my frequent daily snack, sure look better than they ever did before, hence my question about the craving for solid food, and if that ever retreats.
I've been keeping the produce stockers at Costco and Sprouts rather busy. A month on liquid....this should prove interesting.
Nope, but bad breath can be caused by a dry mouth. I was a bit light headed at end of the first day and up until this afternoon, I've kinda had what's like a low grade hangover feeling. I also stopped caffeine intake, and that might be part of it. Feel just fine now. That strawberry-banana one from Bolthouse Farms is now my favorite both for the taste and because it seems more filling than the others.
FYI I don't intend to do this long term like some of you other folks. Just a week or two to kick start things before heading back into the gym for old-fashioned exercise (except running for now of course).
It didn't for me. After a month and a half, I figured I was done, and went back to food again. I could have killed someone...... However, it's been a long time since I've done juicing, a year and 7 months ago, and I have only put on 20 of the +50 I lost (I don't exercise either). I gained it all the last month of school (April), I'm a stress eater... Haven't lost a pound, but haven't gained anything since either. I went from 307, to 250 - 252, back up to 270, and have just been hovering. I literally put on all 20 in April... I ate like a pig though, all fast food.... Stress eating was bad that month.
Actually, just checked before posting this, I'm at 268 right now, and just got back from dinner and a movie with friends.....
Yes, it does. The first few days are the worst. After that it gets better and you really only have to deal with the mental hunger which is to say you will crave foods but it's all mental.
It's a lot easier than I thought it would be.
That's good if this is working for you but it's technically not a juice fast. It's more of a low calorie diet using juice to replace some meals. In order to do a proper juice fast you can't take in ANYTHING but juice and water. You don't want to put anything in your digestive system at all and after some time your body starts converting fat to ketones for energy to supplant the lost calories from eating. Doing what you're doing might work alright at first but what will likely happen is that body will hit starvation mode and start storing even more of the small meals that you do put in your body. It's a delicate balance and the best and easiest way is to just do a full on juice fast if you're going to drink that much juice. The added food in your system will also make the times when you don't have food in your system worse since you will have physical hunger pretty much all the time.
Awesome!
That might be all you need to kick start things to get her to give you a hand whenever she gets back. Could even be something she might want to do and it might change your eating habits overall moving forward. All these things would be good things but what you need is a chance to try it out which it sounds like you've got so best of luck.
Dude, you gotta get a bidet add-on for your toilet! I don't use toilet paper anymore and it's glorious! Haha... I guess that's a topic for another thread though.
I think that I'm pretty close to breaking even and might even be saving some money over eating food since I ate out a fair amount before I started. You also have to account for the money you'll save on LOTS of things just through living a healthier lifestyle. Heart procedures are spendy.
A lot of the symptoms I read people having on a juice fast can be attributed to dehydration of various levels. Drink tons of water and you'll probably see most of these go away. I haven't had any symptoms that I see people having myself.
Sounds like someone is due for another juice diet!
Jer, you keep saying that drinking just juice is not putting anything into your digestive system, and it's not true. Food goes into your stomach where it is broken down to be processed in your intestines. Solid food or not, it all ends up in your intestines for processing, and in more or less the same form. Even if you give yourself an ennema, your digestive system is still working to absorb what your body needs, and discard what it doesn't.
It sounds like you are worried that the caloric intake of ANY solid food will break some threshold and put your body into storing mode. That may be true, but it is incorrect to say that you are not using your digestive system. That would be more for an intravenious diet.
Day 19 juice fast check-in:
Starting Weight: 290.8
Current Weight: 267.4
Previous Weight: 267.4
Lost since yesterday: 0.0 :-(
Total Weight lost: 23.4
To say I'm frustrated by today's weigh-in would be an understatement. Especially considering I gained 0.2lbs yesterday. This made me decide to take a look at my progress that I've been tracking and I've lost only 3.0lbs this calendar week. A far cry from the pace I was on when I started which was over 10lbs per week. While I accepted the fact that this pace wouldn't continue I didn't expect it to drop off to nearly nothing. I mean, less than a half a pound per day is hardly worth denying myself food for and I'm relatively sure that introducing healthy foods in reasonable portions could attain this progress and plus I would be more able to work in exercise here and there as time presents itself. In short, I'm 10 days short of the 30 day mark and am considering breaking the fast. I may wait a few more days to see what happens but I'm not confident I'll just snap back to where I was or even close to it. I had hoped to lose around a pound per day based on the research I did and what other people in a similar situation lost. I started off really strong and since then things have really fizzled for me. I mean at this pace I would lose about ten pounds next month... hardly worth the effort. The last time this was frustrating and I wasn't going to overreact but I really haven't seen too much since then so this is indicating more of a trend than a temporary anomaly. I tried days of nothing but veggie juicing and that didn't help. I tried days of just fruit juicing and that didn't help. I tried upping my water intake and that didn't seem to help either. I'm at a loss and am currently considering if I'm going to see this through the full 60 days, cut it to 30 days or just kill it now. I don't want to give up but if I'm not getting anywhere near the progress I had expected I don't necessarily feel like I'm giving up. It has been a week after all. I just don't know at this point.
Patience, grasshopper. And fart carefully.
I did miss that, sorry. Well, I read it earlier in the day and I read the entire thing but didn't get a chance to respond. By the time I got back I think I read the first sentence to remind myself and wanted to make sure that people understood that on a juice fast you can't mix food in here and there.
For the purpose of this juice fast and this conversation there is a difference and it's a big difference. I'm just trying to keep the conversation informative but not too scientific or things could get boring & difficult to follow quickly. I get what you're saying but it's a different kind of digestion entirely since the juice is already in liquid form and easily assimilated by the body. In other words, as close to IV nutrients as you can get w/o the needle and nobody wants to do an IV fast diet. [Coffee]
Haha... I've actually been fine in that respect the whole time. I do have lots of patience but if I'm not going to be making progress it's not a question of patience. I mean, you can sit and watch the grass grow and be as patient as you want but it's not going to cut itself just based on your level of patience I guess is the point I'm trying to make. I can be patient all day long... hell even for another month at something near a pound per day but closer to 1/4lb per day doesn't seem like it's worth it IMO.
I bet you wouldn't say that 10 lbs in a month isn't good enough for you if you actually got there. That'd bring your total to over 30lbs down. Loosing weight is loosing weight. If you stop your diet, you'll likely stop your weight loss. Then in another month when you've gained half of your current losses back, you'll really be kicking yourself when you could have been 30 down instead of only 10 down.
Why don't you have your wife record your results every day for the next week while you close your eyes. Then you can stress out about it less. Stress isn't going to help anything.
The original reason for Juice fasting, was not for weight loss. It was to heal. It was to give your body the best chance at healing itself. The lack of intake of calories just cuts weight. So, does it work as a great weight loss thing? Ya, without a doubt it does, but it is a way of healing first and foremost. Unless you do this for long enough for your body to "reset" itself, you will gain the weight back fast as your metabolism will not change.
I ate a carrot... fast over.
If I was dieting and exercising and still eating I would be happy with 10lbs in a month. But I'm not. I'm drinking juice and water so the expectations are different. The idea was to use this to drop a bunch of weight and rid myself of the desire for shitty food and lots of it. I've done that. I lost nearly 25lbs in a couple of weeks and the way I used to eat doesn't even sound good to me at all. I've gained the ability to resist the desire to stuff myself of shit and those are what I wanted to accomplish. The plan was to get healthier and lose a big chunk of fat and then continue losing at a slower pace through healthy eating and working out. I never had a deadline when I started, I just wanted to try it out and see how it worked. I didn't have any of the side effects others had talked about and I was losing weight so I figured why not... I'll do the 60 days I've seen others do. Well, being as the deadline was never set in stone I don't see it as a failure so much as what I accomplished and think I can take it from here now. Most of the people do like a week or two and now I can see why. There's nothing to say that I couldn't do it again someday and if I did I would likely just plan for 2 weeks. I just feel like it's gotten to a point where I think I can achieve the same progress through healthier eating and lifestyle. This also allows me the opportunity to exercise when the opportunity presents itself. While on the fast I was limiting my exercise because when I did workout it REALLY took it out of me (shortness of breath and everything) plus those days my weight loss was non-existent. I think that my body is telling me that it's time to end the fast and start introducing healthy foods and try to ramp my metabolism up.
For me it was weight loss and getting away from food. I guess that could be healing but I don't really see all the cleanse stuff of juice fasting. I mean, if I cleansed somehow then that's an added bonus but I really just needed to get away from my poor eating habits and for me this was the easiest way. I'm giving up pop, dairy, breads and all sorts of junk I used to eat. On top of that the food that I DO eat will be smaller portions and healthier options whenever possible. Couple that with more fruit & vegetable consumption and even juicing to replace meals from time to time and I don't see how I can help to be healthier. Worst case scenario I can't control my eating and start to head down that path again and I just do a juice fast again, possibly longer until I get it right. As of right now I really feel like I've got a different outlook and for me just doing something about it to start this process was half the battle.
Its not over just a speed bump along the way
This is my new juice diet....

Sent from my teepee using smoke signals.
Cut out all wheat and youll see a difference as well. Or should I say stay away from it..
Not sure how this conforms to conventional 'juice diet' wisdom but I added cayenne pepper to my juice today and what a world of difference - this is actually pretty good stuff now! (still all the celery/carrots/cucumbers/peppers/tomatoes/kale, but now with enough zing to make it something to look forward to....instead of dread).
Well, I'm gonna roll with this juice thing for awhile, I think. I've done well so far, and my juicer cost too much to quit. There's a lot of recipes out there to try, and I've made some good experiments. I have "cheated" a couple times when my body demanded something else, but no crap. Nothing like I used to do! Only been a week.
Keep the updates coming. They're great. I could see a difference in your face from that terminator pic. Just a thought: the wife uses a "fitbit" which tracks her steps. She shoots for a daily goal and just tries to make that goal each day, then gets really excited when she beats it. Even if you start eating again, that's not bad. Your results are great and you helped others take the first step. Do you have a dog? Maybe take him for a walk twice a day. Or go for a walk after dinner every night. Every little bit helps. I'm not saying start running or pumping iron at the gym, but an increase in activity will boost your metabolism and that will help your body want to burn more. Got a friend nearby who likes guns? Go for a walk every day and talk about shooting or something else. All the talking will keep your mind off the fact that you're going for a walk. My .02.
PS - I started drinking two glasses of bolthouse juice every day.
Thanks for the tips man. I've got two little dogs and I plan to walk them even more but the problem becomes in a couple of months when the temps drop down. Our dogs are Italian Greyhounds so they don't have any fat or hair to keep them warm. Anything below about 70 deg outside to them is cold so needless to say they don't go outside at all about 4 or 5 months out of the year. But I get what you're saying and I will do my best to work in exercise whenever possible. I'm happy that this was the motivating factor for me to start getting healthier and I'm glad that my ranting out loud convinced others to take steps too. If more people took that first step we'd be healthier as a nation. Along those lines I will probably still update from time to time and will remain somewhat active to help others who have questions or concerns that I may know the answer to.
Funny, I'm starting to crave cooked veggie dishes.....
This is something my friends and I talked about... Your body can't stop doing what it does, I.E. it just can't stop using calories. He'd be dead at that point... So, either he's actually gaining something to equal the balance of the fat loss, or he's putting something in, that is stopping the loss. This fast, makes your body more efficient (hence why it was originally come up with to battle terminal diseases, with an amazingly high cure factor). I never plateaued. My friends never did either. I will have to check, but I'm sure one got to over 65lbs in a couple months. Now, and I can't say that I have tested it, or know of someone who has either, but if your body is in this hyper healthy mode, wouldn't you build muscle faster, and easier? I know that the fast let my body take care of an injury of mine that "supposedly" needed surgery to fix. So, what else could this do?
On my next go around, I'm going to try to test this. I'm going to workout, and see what happens on the weeks that I do it, and the weeks that I don't.
Also, no doctor can legally prescribe this fast, it's illegal for them to do so says the FDA. They can do variations of it, but no the actual fast. < I'm posting that last part because I've now heard back from the doctors that I have asked, that weren't related to me. So, if none have prescribed it the correct way, how can they say anything about it? BS
Yeah man! Keep it up. I've been doing the "low carb" thing for a year and a half and it kicks ass (down 50 lbs.). I don't even crave that shit much anymore. When I do eat a carb heavy meal, I feel like total shit.
Anyway, keep going bro!
I think these kinds of blips will happen in any kind of diet or exercise routine and if you had stuck it out a bit your progress would have continued. On the other hand, a) a juice only diet for 2 months doesn't make much sense to me (hence why I don't plan to do it more than 2 weeks max) and b) you've accomplished a lot in a short time -- 23.4 lbs isn't chump change --and it's a good start for both your body and mind in terms of getting some progress and positive reinforcement that it can be done. So I don't hold it against you for wanting to get some solid food down at this point, especially as a juice-only diet isn't the only way to accomplish your goal. It sounds like part of your goal was to reset your brain and body for your eating habits in general and looks like you reached that point, so as long as you don't suddenly reverse course into the old habits, you will still be making good progress, albeit maybe not as fast as before. Good work and keep at it.
So here's where I'm at on the 7th day:
Starting weight: 243.6
Current weight: 234.4
Total weight lost: 9.2
I'm not sure how this little juice fast will play out this week. I still have a few days worth of juice so I may try to run with it through next Sunday. However, I may have to travel for work this week and I'm not going to stress about finding juice if that's the case.
Day 8
Starting Weight: 323
Current Weight: 308
Down 15
