I think the fact that the folks on the board are less national/international and more localized helps alot. When you might well bump into the guys you are talking to on the board, you tend to be a bit more rational and courteous. Plus you come to know some of these guys, and like and respect them. On the other hand, something about anonymity brings out the worst in us. I started a monthly breakfast for the guys and gals of a large metro gun forum long ago and far away and I hosted the breakfast at a local restaurant for about five years. It was astonishing how the decorum and politeness of the board skyrocketed after the guys got to know each other at the breakfasts, formed relationships, and started seeing each other socially and shooting together. I did it just to encourage relationships but the effect it had on the forum was dramatic and unforeseen.
