IIRC, OK is the only state that voted all Red last election cycle.

Dr. David Demming was essentially forced out of the School of Geology but remains employed by OU.

The comments under the OP/ED piece by Dr. Demming did not give the impression of an overly conservative audience.

IMO, In the most conservative areas, a governement university will still be the most Progressive and leftist place around.

UW in Laramie, WY is a great example of this.

Not just a failure of education, failure of parents to teach their children that dreams are nice but dreams aren't reality and failure of students to question what the teacher is telling them.

While most of us consider it a failure, everyone should keep in mind this is actually a HUGE success, on the part of the leftists and their agenda.

People need to stop looking at this as anything but exactly that or we will lose everything. My point is that the leftists look at it as exactly what it is, a war, and this specific battlefield is and has been dominated by them.

It's not a general education failure, its them winning that battle, there's no coincidence about it, its 100% intentional on their part.

Students aren't allowed to question anymore.

If the purpose of raising an educating a child is to make a capable human being, then their attraction to collectivism (programs for incapable human beings) is evidence of the failure.

Be a good parent and show them how to be a capable human being by example. Be involved in your kids lives and their education, get to know their teachers and make sure you reinforce the behaviors and ideas you want to instill in them.

Because it is possible to raise functioning members of society in this day and age (gasp!) and it doesn't require isolation from society nor does it require a ridiculously restrictive lifestyle.

Far too many parents are not involved in their kids lives and education... In doing that, you can at least teach them that everything they learn in school is NOT correct, and why.


And it IS possible to home school without isolating them from society or leading a "restrictive lifestyle". Home schooling is taking involvement in your kids lives and education to the highest level.


Do you think it would be a good idea to have your kids exposed to prison inmates with no supervision? Yes, an extreme example, but so is saying all home schooled kids are isolated, living "ridiculously restricted lifestyles"...

There are good teachers in government schools just like there are good employees working for the government. Those good people are constrained by the agenda of the Progressive in charge of that government. The good people inside are worn down over time like stones in a mountain stream.

I know some home schooled kids, they're GREAT! They're pleasant to be around and to talk to about a variety of topics.

I don't know where this idea came from that home schooled kids are restricted or isolated, probably from the same stupid fucktards that voted the union back in power in JeffCo.

I think it comes from the leftists that are upset they don't get the FEDERAL FUNDS because our kids aren't in their system... Follow the money.

Our kids are in extracurricular activities (like sports) and we consistently hear how much they prefer how polite, friendly and teachable or kids are compared to other kids in their program. Some have no idea our kids are home schooled.

ETA: common core and school violence has started a mass migration to home/on-line schooling. Many school districts now have on line programs started for troubled kids, but are being inundated when parents realize they have options.

Keep him out of the (re)education camps. We're making some financial changes to pay for private school. If that doesn't work out, it's home school of some sort.

For higher ed (which is where the expensing brainwashing happens), find a program that will lead to a valued skill (STEM) or learn a trade. This means having a business plan for college and not just going because "everyone else is" or "I have to so I can be a successful person."

Think of the poor Libtarded millennial with $60K in student debt making $35K entry pay at a corporation with an Lib Arts degree. And that salary means corporate America can have it's way with the sad millennial for life (think 60+ hours if you're not in a protected status).

It's no wonder they vote Libtard because the American Dream has been destroyed by their own choices. Oh, and it's the bank's fault, sure. So they need Big Gov to come in and save them from themselves.

And compare to the trades where a reasonable hard worker can make $80K+ after an apprenticeship. Can start his own business, work his own hours, etc... Contract work of any kind is good. Starting a business in anything is great! Build a future while you are young and have the energy, don't waste those years paying interest on school loans for a degree you'd never really use.

It's s little disappointing how negative you guys are. Home school didn't get a bad rap from liberals, it got that reputation from religious fanatics that sheltered their children from life in general. The only reason anyone knew those people existed was because the kids weren't in school.

Schools have been liberal and declining for a long time, certainly while I was in school, and certainly for members older than I am. Yet, there are still members of society that are not worthless lepers. School isn't completely worthless yet. MOST of your child's behavior should be learned at home, and when that is the case they'll be much more resistant to bad stuff at school.

In general I agree that usually a person gets as much out of something as they are willing to put into the effort of achieving.

Lots of people receive adequate educations from the government schools and many of them go on to become independent, self reliant adults.

I agree that the primary location for all education, both intellectual, social, and moral, should be the home. I am saddened that for so many children, home is not a stable, loving place where they can learn the things that will help them succeed.

There have been some horrific stories involving a small percentage of home schoolers and an even smaller subset of un-schoolers. Some of that is motivated by religion, but most of it just stems from some very odd parents. I'm thinking of some of the compound dwellers who parade their kids around in sheets. This is an extremely small minority of kids compared to the vast majority of children wallowing in the social experiment of government schools. Just the very environment in out schools is artificial. Where else in your life will you spend 7 hours a day, 5 days each week, for 8 months of the year in a room with people, all within two years of age from your age, and all of these people are governed by someone who is 5 to 20 years your senior. The diversity in ability and motivation among the teachers in government schools is amazing. Many love their profession and get real satisfaction from helping young people learn new skills. Some are just putting in their time. All of them are expected to conform to the ever changing demands of school administrators, and school boards which are populated by some of the most ignorant Progressive union activists in the country. Throw in the fact that teachers are not truly in charge of their classrooms anymore because of the policies against expelling, suspending, or prosecuting some of the behavior of the "children" in those classrooms. Those teachers are evaluated on the performance of those children despite the fact that the children were not equipped to succeed by the teachers in the previous grades. It is a wonder to me that anyone makes it through a career as an educator in that environment.

It's hard to justify putting children into that system.

Our daughter's school is one that is doing poorly. Mostly due to parents who don't care. At least 10 kids have been absent from my daughter's class alone for Monday and Tuesday. Those two days were the government testing days. Terrible parents felt it was okay to keep their kids up late and be hung over in Monday, then miss again on Tuesday. The school district is going to take a terrible hit this year in performance and those parents will only have themselves to blame. We're active in our kid's life and it won't matter as much to us.

Well, your kids will tell you, but it'll be too late by then. Our kid's teachers have always been great. Our niece on the other hand, who is in the same school but a grade ahead, has had the same teacher for three years and every day we get to hear about how the teacher texts and spins around in her chair the whole time during any "quiet times." haha. I tell her, "If you're taking a test or working on a project, you just do your work and don't worry about what the teacher is doing."

Take a look at the canon city high school news the past few months, and hear from people that reported their kids were approached YEARS ago and the administration did nothing

May as well be prison.... now you can see how someone gets jaded.

The decline in aggregate doesn't concern me either, it's consistent with society. It's the fact that the "system" is designed to make every child a failure is what concerns me. IMHO, this is the biggest failure of public education and makes it worse than worthless because it can actually limit a person's ability to succeed in life in spite of who they want to be.

Home school (and there are many options) prevents the "system" from holding a good kid back. It's not an ideal arrangement at all, again IMHO. Just one of the only viable options for middle class families to escape the "system."

In DougCo we had vouchers for awhile that would help with private school but the Liberals killed it using the courts. The same Liberals that demand a monopoly on the failure of education.

You can blame those parents plenty, but parents didn't disengage until the social and economic conditions in this country changed. The Leftists have succeeded in breaking apart families and institutionalizing every member of the family. Another reason they want year-round school when all the studies show kids won't perform any better on the tests.

What kind of a person is the "system" going to produce in the future? One with no time for interests outside of "school" which consists of teaching kids how to vote rather than how to think and life skills. And it's harder to take on a job as well. We're producing 22+ year old children and wondering why they vote for big gov--they need a lifetime parent.

Don't think I'm against home schooling, as I'm not at all. I just don't like the helpless attitude crying about how bad schools are. Sure they're bad, but parents still have the ability to have majority control over the direction of their kid's lives is my point.

Knowing what your child is doing, who they are interacting with, what they are thinking is of the utmost importance. Not just providing food and shelter.

I feel there's a lot of truth in this post. The first part happened with my young family. I'd leave the house in the morning before my son woke up, commuted 2 hours per day and often didn't get home until 8pm or later, hoping to get home in time to put him to bed. My wife's situation wasn't as bad but both of us were too tired to consistently prepare healthy meals or have quality interactions with our son. This was probably the driving factor for us to move out of California (couldn't afford to live close to work). Now I get home around 5:00 and have real quality time with my son every day.

Anyway I learned that being a good parent is a lot of work, and you can't do a good job at it if you're spending so much time/energy at the job or commuting.
