Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the liberal icon who served on the Supreme Court since 1993 and who crusaded for women?s rights before that, died on Friday at the age of 87.
Ginsburg died from complications of cancer, according to the Supreme Court. She died Friday evening surrounded by her family at her home in Washington.
The justice dictated a statement to her granddaughter in the days before her death, NPR reported. Ginsburg said: ?My most fervent wish is that I will not be replaced until a new president is installed.?

Justice Ginsburg is dead.
Finally, God forgive me.
[Beer[Beer][Beer]
Just walked in and it?s on the news. The timing is potentially fortunate.
Dems will do everything possible to stall the replacement till after the election.
My condolences to her family and friends.
That?s all I?ve got.
Well, since I popped in to the other thread to offer my condolences to her friends and family I guess I?ll do it here too.
Condolences.
Regardless of who started the first one, I hope all of the threads get merged.
We don't dance on people graves. I hope people remember this.
ROMNEY will fvck it up
Merged. Okay, let me be the first to say in advance...
KEEP IT CLASSY people.
While normally I'd be pleased at the prospects for SCOTUS any time prior to six months ago, I've recently been warning people this is the biggest "trigger" issue that I'd predict could lead to outright civil war, and it has happened. Is if we thought the weeks leading to elections were bad enough, people are going to be going absolutely psychotic over this now.
I'm not joking when I compare her to the assassination of Franz Ferdinand. We were already on shaky ground before, shit is going to get real, and we may not get to see the benefits of these developments like we'd have ordinarily expected.
While I vehemently disagreed with her opinions and most of her positions, I did respect her as an adversary and she did stick to her "guns", pun intended. It is strange to respect people who have been a thorn in my side, but what would life be without thorns.
Peaceful, and with martinis and awesome food, I think. But maybe not as deep.
Everyone working in gov/police/security/etc. - you better have exceptionally heightened awareness from now through Nov.
Don't bring your home to work, so to speak, and stay off your phone as much as you can.
She had a pretty remarkable life.
Fuck the democrats. They're not in charge of the senate and they're gonna have a hissy fit regardless of what happens. Nothing will change them.
Honest question
as a younger member only being able to vote in 3 elections so far and not really following politics until 2018 or so
What stemmed the almost universal dislike for her rulings/dissents
i am reading through the cases That easily come up via search.
My title says it all. And that is my civilized version. If we can't post the truth on the forum, then what is the point of posting at all?

Quote:
Second Amendment 'Outdated'
In the wake of the Colorado recall election and a fierce, nationwide debate over gun rights and gun control, Justice Ginsburg also comments on the past, present and future of the Second Amendment. She cites her dissent in District of Columbia v. Heller, and says her "view of the Second Amendment is one based on history."
She continues, "The Second Amendment has a preamble about the need for a militia...Historically, the new government had no money to pay for an army, so they relied on the state militias. And the states required men to have certain weapons and they specified in the law what weapons these people had to keep in their home so that when they were called to do service as militiamen, they would have them. That was the entire purpose of the Second Amendment."
Different belief but she served our country.
Sad day today.
The far left and fringe are now going to exaggerate the stakes of this election beyond what we could have previously imagined. I would not be surprised to see especially heightened levels of violence attempted in the next few weeks - both targeted (e.g. potentially POTUS) and untargeted (e.g. OKC) but police and government are the top of the pile for "ire", and then all of your BLM types will think they're now practically missionaries for "RBG" and doing things in "her honor", so we might see more random attempts on officer's lives like we've already witnessed.
Not happy about it, but definitely not sad. I do think this helps the Dems, reminding them what's at stake. 0% chance it gets filled before election, maaaaaaybe if it turns lame duck but highly doubtful.
I do think it'd be wise for Trump to narrow his previous list to his top 5 choices and force Biden to do the same.
McConnell has already said "unequivocally" that any Trump nominee will get a vote in the senate. The republicans getting Kavanaugh confirmed was pretty remarkable...considering...well, they're republicans. And that was largely due to McConnell. So I at least have some hope McConnell can pull it off again.
You are absolutely right. Anyone with a brain can see Joe really doesn't stand a chance without fraud and cheating. Conservatives know that, the left knows that. 4 car parades and 6 person rallies do not make a winning candidate.
So they are going to be absolutely, insanely desperate now. They may think they have a small chance to hold off a nomination until after the election, but they can't hold it off if Trump wins. Which is looking very likely. And that puts the President at risk. I hope the USSS is on their game.
While I strongly oppose many of her decisions as a member of the Supreme Court, she was dedicated and steadfast (and a Liberal hack), but I wish her to RIP, her life story is worth reading. Quite the lady.
That said, this really churns up the waters on the election status. The Dems couldn't have asked for more!
Why can’t the republicans admit that they were wrong and the democrats were right on the garland nomination and push one through now? I think it would be worth it to lose the next election over another sc nomination
Ginsberg actually died a while back.
She just fell over tonight.
RIP, although I didn’t necessarily agree with her she was a helluva Grand Dame’. Impressive career.
So we can speak ill of the living in hopes they change, but can’t be happy they are gone for what they did?
How does that apply to someone, say Hitler?
And before you go and say he committed genocide, I’d be interested to see how many abortions were done over the years she was a SCOTUS judge.
"My most fervent wish is that I will not be replaced until a new president is installed."
So the government should hold off until January? I hope they swear in a new justice next week.
One of the benefits of holding the majority in the senate is you get to make the rules and you get to confirm judges. The democrats don't have any problem using whatever power they have so I don't think it should bother the republicans. It's business. And it's important business. They don't need to admit anything. They just need to get a judge confirmed. Democrats can whine and piss and moan all they want. Fuck 'em.
With the way they played the sickening games with Kavenaugh I would love to see the GOP break it off in their ass.
