Cop bashing or not, this is unacceptable. As I said before, I was an LEO in the early eighties. Only part of the job that sucked was other cops. Too many assholes, to much abusing authority, not enough psych exams. And apparently it ain't got any better. I was naive back when, I never understood why so many people were disgusted with cops. I was not the only one in my family and family friends.

I don't know how long Hughes has been on the job, but I would guess that his supervisors and co-workers are well aware of his issues and won't be holding any fund raisers to help out with his legal defense.
I normally buy my gas at that Costco and I am pretty certain I know the older gentleman who works as an attendant at the pumps. He is usually out of the building and walking around, even in inclement weather. He is friendly and a nice guy to chat with. If the victim in this assault is this same gentleman, it would take a real animal to inflict any kind of violence on him. I will pray that justice is swift and efficient in this case. I often pray for this but I am often disappointed.

I'm glad to hear the last officer you dealt with acted professionally. So often we focus on the 1% who cause 99% of the problems. This is true for every occupation and a large issue with any profession that has so much authority. I think everyone who has a beef with anyone in authority should make themselves heard. Everyone has a boss. Find out who the person's boss is and submit a written complaint. Call me naive, but I still believe that good people stand up when no one else will. Good people do what they believe is right despite the consequences. YMMV
I've been trying VERY hard to stay quiet on the various threads dealing with law enforcement, but I can't let cstone have to uphold the fight on behalf of us in law enforcement.
Byte, I'm glad you had a positive experience with Jeffco recently, especially given your bias against law enforcement in general.
That being said, most here know I have no love for Denver PD and I believe they have a culture within their agency that needs changing. That isn't going to happen overnight, given the size of the agency. If I was Mayor Elect Hancock, I would immediately:
1. Fire Chief Whitman and hire someone from the outside
2. Change the way the promotion process is conducted for officers Lieutenant and higher are conducted and look for outside officers to compete to fill the higher positions
3. Immediately put in all patrol vehicles GPS and emergency light activated in-vehicle cameras and audio microphones and make it an immediate termination offense if they are disabled or not used
4. Increase the minimimum requirements for hiring standards to be similar to most agencies that surround the city; the ideal officer having a minimum of two years of higher education, military service, be no younger than 25 and be married.
5. End collective bargaining with the PPA. Enact a step program combined with a pay for performance program for any pay raises.
6. Streamline the complaint process and enable the Chief to terminate officers for performance
These measures will start the changes necessary, but they will need to lose a number of the mid and older officers who might not be willing to change.
If I saw a guy that size beating up a man that age, I'm not sure what I'd do. Probably call the police and make a big deal about it. If it got worse, he'd have a gun in his face. I'm not sure what I'd do once he got cocky and flashed his badge though. Probably keep it there. Wasn't there video at this gas station?

Judges tend to shy away from the "ass raping" sentence. It is often overturned as a violation of the 8th Amendment.
I'm glad someone on this board knows him. As I mentioned earlier in this thread, I have spoken to and dealt with the victim several times while getting gas at that Costco. There are always more than one side to every story. At the moment, Hughes' case is being tried on the internet and through the local media. Ultimately his case will be decided by either a judge, jury of his peers or settled through plea agreement.
Whatever the outcome of the judicial action for Hughes, he probably does not have a future in law enforcement, but that would just be my opinion.
Turning your vehicle off at the station is a private property issue, not one of law. That guy is a douche bag and took it too far.
