Awesome.
Good luck up there.
Seems like only last week I was in your shoes...and wow...almost 30 years have elapsed. ASVAB is critical if you are scratchin' on Intell / Crypto opps so..."do well, don't stress (no need) but..do well."
Beware of the "Dragon Lady" with the large square need in the left testicle...
Never mind, she was in the San Diego MEPS in the '80's. She was a shorter Asian lady that walked with a limp and had a wanky eye... She was SCARY!!
[Beer]
Good luck and don't stress... It's not that bad.
Good luck man, and remember, until you're walking on to the airplane headed for wherever basic is, it's not too late to say "I might have done this wrong, need to go back and fix some things..."
Don't sign anything until you're satisfied with what you have in your contract. If it's not in writing no one is obligated to give you anything. What MOS are you hoping for? Are they offering Duty Station of Choice (they didn't for me and I wish they had)?
Wow, two terms I've not thought or heard of in a long time! What did you score on your ASVAB?
I'm shooting for either Intel or Crypto, or possibly Master at Arms.
Right there with you on not signing anything. I'm doing delayed entry, so if the job I want at the time I want isn't available, I'm not gonna do it. If I was 18, well, might be a different story, but I'm 31 now [Tooth]
Taking the ASVAB tonight, so we'll see. I scored pretty high on the AFQT, so I shouldn't have a problem getting in to either of the ones I really want
Ugh I just had to deal with that last month. You'll be surprised at how few people end up actually swearing in with you at the end of the day. When I got there in the morning there were about forty of us, but once it got to the end ceremony there were only five other people with me. Just watch out for the lady who does the blood test...she freakin' mauled my arm. Also keep an eye on the guy next to you when you take the piss test...damn kid next to me was so nervous he almost dumped his cup on my leg.
"So I start the MEPS process tonight with my ASVAB". From reading the posts in this thread, I guess these abbreviations have to do with the Military. Some of us MUCH older guys have no idea what the hell MEPS and ASVAB is. Care to help me understand, please.[Help]
I might be going next week myself. Good luck dude!
Just a quick little thing, I take it you have a degree? If you go enlisted you can enter as an E4 (trust me it helps, privates ain't worth diddly). Or did you ever think of maybe doing being commissioned as an officer? True you won't get to actually PICK your job, but the pay, treatment, and responsibility (from the outside looking in as I was enlisted) sure is better. But man, good for you on intel/crypto. I was 35F (most boring intel job there is- should have gone HUMINT Collection [HCT]), all my buddies who went Crypto were smart as shiznit and had like 16-18month AIT with minimum 6 year active service obligation. Some of the best and brightest our country has to offer, good luck brother! [Beer]
Just a side note, I just got paperwork from my IRR reserve unit saying they need some info from me to determine my medical retention ability- basically saying I'll get a 100% full and free discharge from my 3 years and some change obligation to IRR. I weigh this as good and bad, but it does hurt if SHTF in my life and I choose to go back to service they'll tell me thanks but I can't. So gotta make appointments and get the packet sent back and see if they send me my discharge.
[Luck]
Get used to the rest of the plt calling you pops! [Tooth]
When I got to the reception station at basic there was one guy who just made it under the age requirement-he was 33 and thats what everyone called him
Remember-stay motivated and dont let shit bother you
You'll do fine!![Beer]
Well AMEN brother, thanks for doing your part! You're never too old to serve your country, I was just wondering what made you do it now - but I'm glad you are [Beer].
Fortunately you just barely meet the requirements for a commission if you go that route, as long as you can do 20 then they'll let you go for your bars. At least that's how it was when I was in.
Are you going Army, or those other things......um....branches.[Tooth]
Good luck, I used to work meps while I did my recruiting assignment, itll be boring as hell waiting around but a lot of the military is hurry up and wait, remember its like applying for a job a lot of people dont understand that and act amazed when we kick them out for being disrespectful
Good Luck!!!![Alrigh]
Should I make a trip up to MEPS tomorrow and tell the Medical staff to take "extra" care of you?
When they take your BP look at the sticker on the side. You will find the initials "JC" on it.......[Coffee] And good luck. All the younger guys will call ya "gramps" in basic. Will be looking for an update in about a month.
So, passed medical with flying colours. And then sat around for a while, and then rejected because of some of my tattoos... [Rant2]
I'm gonna push the issue if possible and try for a waiver somehow, but I dunno.
I've been pretty down since Friday...
Dude that sucks!!!! When I talked to the navy the recruiter said they are at 140% manpower. Just try to push the issue I'm sure they'll give you a break. Interested in any other service?
If you are looking at trying Army look here. This is a job that on the outside if you are good would start at $50K after 5 years in the Army. It also is very computer heavy these days. Just A thought.[Coffee]
