I was thinking shelter would be the eaiest to find in the burbs.
I quit half way thru
the questions are far too poorly written to even bother with this.
I'd be dead according this this quiz. 14 right. A lot of those questions are situational dependent. Being in dark vegetation white smoke would be easier to see then dark smoke produced by rubber.
12.. [Tooth]
11/25 but I don't agree with a few questions. But I learned a few things. Like what wood is good for friction fire. And that I need to brush up on survival info!
You got 24 of 25 correct.
Your score: 96%
Basswood is better than Oak for a friction fire? What the hell is basswood? I just choose wood to build a fire. [Tooth]
I am going to agree with you here. The one about falling in the water, I selected the start a fire option to get warm and dry out. WRONG! "Change your clothes and get in a sleeping bag" WHAT? In what survival situation are you going to have a change of clothes and a sleeping bag that didn't get wet with you? Am I camping or surviving and trying to get out of the situation? I also selected water in the Urban survival situation for the same reasons ronaldrwl did haha[Beer]. 14/25.
i learned years ago from a native american guy that they would use the core of a yuca for their bow drill since once dry they are very hard and produce nice friction fires
Facing a shelter door east??
The most severe storms in Colorado are from the east!
In an urban survival scenario, your priority is ...Shelter?
In an urban environment shelter is everywhere.
Is there even basswood in Colorado?
It is only native to north-eastern US... sorry.
Setting dozens of traps?
That seems like a waste of time until you prove the area is even productive.
Bug out bag most valuable is shelter?
If you have a bag and are bugging out you probably also have a vehicle.- no shelter needed.
Get your campfire going under any conditions?
Sorry a lighter doesn't work when wet or raining heavily... but a spark rod always works.
If ya got a 100%, Colorado is not your survival location.
17 but I will agree with many of the posters. Having grown up in Oregon I feel for the natives that have never seen Moss.
Moss? WTF is that???? Saw it in a picture once. [Flower] A very non SW quiz. At least I knew that Beavers have lots of calories. [Beer]
I agree! Pretty vague. 19 out of 25 here. Still a fun quiz though. Thanks Mtn.man!! [Beer]
I didn't do so well, and I'll claim the questions/answers didn't seem well written to me.
Still wondering about finding plastic and rubber for the smokey fire? I know there is a lot of trash out there, but didn't it say "wilderness survival situation"? Where we normally hunt elk, there isn't much for rubber or plastic to burn.
As someone trained by the Military in Woodland Survival, I can say factually that several of these questions have inaccurate (or at the very least, debatable) answers. Many of the questions are dependent on your individual skill level and knowledge. For example:
Q. Which type of items would be the most valuable to have in a Bug Out Bag?
A. Definitely tools. I can build any shelter if I have the tools I need.
I take issue with this one:
Q. If you are bitten on the ankle by a rattlesnake, what's the best course of action?
A. Torniquet and keep your heart rate down. Applying pressure to the wound will not keep the venom from spreading.
Lighters run out of fuel and don't work if its rainy or windy. Flint and Steel will always work.
Honestly, if you are trying to start a friction fire, you should have planned better. Swedish firesteel, flint and steel, even a lighter....
Anyway, everyone likes quizzes I guess...
I think this is because for most of North America, we usually have wind out of the west, all other things being equal (jet stream and all that) so by facing the door east, you get the least wind through your shelter.
It also lets the sun into your shelter during the coldest part of the day to warm you.
13 correct out of 25......doh! [Bang]
21/25
I disagree with the fire method. Lighters malfunction; sparking tools don't...it said any condition.
I had no clue on the shelter opening. In Colorado, I usually go south depending on terrain and storm direction.
I better not get bit by snakes. [Help]
Edit: Two lucky answers...I have no clue on basswood and buttercup. If I had to start a friction fire, I would be screwed. I always have a magnesium fire starter with me.
Totally New England Boy Scout questions. I had a lot of the same problems with the questions. My grandfather in Montana who is also a Dr told me to never rely on a lighter in the field, always find water first, and tools and your brain are your most important survival tools.

You got 25 of 25 correct.
Your score: 100%
Badger
I better not leave the house...
I agree with the most of you. The way the questions were worded and some of the answers left ya to wonder. For those that got 100%, there was definately some good guessing going on because there simply were not cut and dry answers to several questions.
I scored 16 of 25.
