Cool UZI Mini Red Dot Mount Project

After looking at examples of others on the web, I decided to give it a "shot" myself. Don't worry, I bought a $17 surplus cover for the project rather than mess with my original IMI cover. I'm trying different sections of Magpul rails now that I actually managed to drill a mounting hole through the hardened steel of the cover. Without a drill press, it took me about an hour and 3 drill bits, but I got 'er done!

Besides the super hard steel of the top cover, the other challenge is mounting a rail section that is big enough for a micro red dot, but not so big that the charging handle cover is impeaded from going all the way back. Also you have to make sure the bolt carrier inside doesn't hit the bottom of the mounting screw, and that you can still access the button in front of the rear sight that releases the top cover. I'd like to keep the rail low profile in case I need to use the irons without it. A co-witness would be nice, but probably not realistic. Once I figure out what works best, I'll repaint the cover to match the rest of the IMI finish. Still a work in progress, but I'll update the thread once it's all done and I've found an optic that works best.

Rail secured in the middle by only 1 screw hmm.. can you spin it with your fingers or is it solid? If there is some movement occur due to recoil impulse while you shooting RDS Zero will be wandering left and right I guess?
Not so many RDS's will fit on this 3 slot rail. Zeiss Z-Point might perfect give a co-witness but it needs a 5-6 slotted rail to mount on.

I've changed it out to the Magpul light mount (top left), which still only has 3 rails, but has over 2.25" of mounting surface with the extended mount. Also notice the (2) mounting posts on the bottom. They lock into their own holes, so with only the one screw installed, it's VERY solid and not going anywhere.

For the sight I went with a Bushnell First Strike which is supposed to be pretty small, (2.4"), and sits flush. I'll have pics of the new set up soon.

I think BFS will be too high, zeiss Z-point might fit on the extended rail and provide a lower placed dot

    Here's the new rail installed:

Just as an example, here's my 512 mounted. The Bushnell should be at least 1/2 that size, and is described as "too tiny" for an AR-15 in reviews. People also complained that it sits so low on an AR flat top rail with the integrated mount, that you have to turn your head sideways to see the dot. If that's the case, it should work great in this application!

According to the specs the Z-Point is longer and weighs more. Chances are it's taller too. I can't find the exact height of the Busnell, but it's been described as, "... the width of the picatiny rail and only about twice as tall at its best." It doesn't look very tall in photos either, so I guess we'll find out when it arrives.

Urban ERT Sling. I originally bought it for a FS2000. When I sold that gun I was able to buy the attachments I needed for my SCAR. When I sold that, I just bought new attachments for my MP5. Same ones work for the Uzi, but I plan to buy another set, just so I don't have to keep taking them off. Changes easily from a two point to a one point sling and back. The most versatile sling I've ever used. I've owned many guns over the years, but only needed one sling!
