If they learn the language they will have nothing stopping them from taking over.

That's because most Americans are arrogant assholes who think the world revolves around them. I went to France in October. I know a little French. Can't speak but can read and know what things are. So I would just smile and point to things. People will see that and are more willing to speak English as you are not disrespecting them.

I did get spoiled in Germany.
I only know about 10 words in German, and survived there. There are lots of good Eng speakers there.
Airport and DB tend to have employees who are willing to help Eng speakers, if English speakers are polite to them.
I've seen young German ticket checker on a DB train near Czech Rep boarder line asking Czech Citizens in English to see tickets.

However, rest of other countries are not like Germany.

Some of the issue is Americans being extremely sensitive about the Spanish language in general, and misinterpreting everything that is said on the subject.

Yeah, I always get funny looks at Walmart when I voice loudly after running my debit card through the payment machine: "Why the hell should I have to press "1" for English!?"

Utah actually passed an English only bill a number of years ago. As I understand it, no government papers can be printed in Spanish. I'll have to call my sister over there and update myself.

Exactly. I had a hispanic (born here, parents from Central America- legal!) and they got all bent out of shape: "Your refusal to learn Spanish to adapt to the changing culture in America is just an example of extreme laziness." No, I simply don't want to learn Spanish. I do not like the language, it's not a language I have any interest in learning. I know English, I made an attempt (and will continue in the future) to learn German because it's a language I'm interested in. I took the time to learn important words and phrases in pashtu and dari because my job in the Army depended on it. Nothing here depends on me learning Spanish right now, so I choose not to. I still have the right to choose, don't I?
