Another 136th and I-25, Thornton dweller here. According to RTD, light rail will be completed to 124th and Claude in January 2018 (call me skeptical)
Taking the 120X from Wagon Road (120th and Huron) is pretty convenient to downtown if you will be there all day. If it were me, I would probably look in Westminster to take advantage of Federal or US36 to get into downtown a little faster.
Just don't accumulate a whole lot of stuff. If you hate the apartment move when the lease is up. You really won't know if you like a place till you live there.
Another Thornton person here, I'm going on two years up this way, and really like the area. I lived off of 120th and Colorado for the majority of the time, but just moved to down to 104th. In an apartment now, but plan on buying a house in a year or so.
There is no longer any difference between heading North and South on I-25 between about 120th Ave and Arapahoe Blvd.

In Broomfield off 144. Anything north of 120th and you're good.
North/East Lakewood, move over here by me and you'll be near the light rail tracks. You can ride lightrail down to auraria campus and walk over to metro. No parking fees or hassles that way.
Buy the house next to me. Couple gun nuts around our couple of blocks.
This place is just recently built, right on the tracks. Might get into it for cheap. http://www.mwhsolutions.org/lamar-station-crossing.html
I can't tell what is Denver and what is burbs. Golden has some appeal. Hop on 6 or i70 and you are in Denver.
Just throwing out options;

- Lakewood
