It was a 30.06. It would have to be a boltaction hunting style rifle. The guy was a troubled 32 year old. There is nothing you can do to stop a random crazy person from doing this.

"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your counsel nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."
-- Samuel Adams
Kid took a 30.06 to the chest and is recovering in a hospital?
Not too many Germans that can claim that...

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. -- A seventh-grade math teacher is being called a hero. David Benke, a 6-foot-5 former college basketball player who oversees the school's track team, tackled the suspected gunman at Deer Creek Middle School as he was trying to reload his weapon."(The shooter) was trying to rack another round," Benke said. "I knew he couldn't get another round in before I got to him, so I grabbed him."

As a parent of a 15 year old High School student, THANK YOU DAVID BENKE!!!
BLESS THIS HERO and may there be MORE like him!!!
It must be a boulder thing, this is just what i have seen with my own two eyes it could just be the ST vrain schools have some of these systems in place at schools have not seen this in highschools though.
sniper7- well i am guessing its cause im up north close to boulder area, but i know for sure niwot elementry has this system since 2008 i had to use it two years ago to get into the school. Maybe a select few have this in place. so i will through out the idea that all the schools have this system since most dont from the sound of it.
prayers to the families, good thing nobody was killed.
yeah there are a few schools out there that do it, but most of them do not. It usually tends to be the higher funded schools. Even then it would not stop someone from waiting outside in their vehicle getting out when school is over with kids everywhere.
It is very unfortunate. there really is no good way to stop things like this from happening, gun free zones are just safe houses from whack jobs and killers.
Peter Boyles on 630AM said something about this guy being a mentally disturbed person who used his father's rifle. Try to get more details.

That's what they are saying, he was off his meds, and he heard voices in his head.
Defense lawyers will blame it on healthcare, lack of, and the falling economy, etc.
I'm not doubting the mentally disturbed, or trying to take anything away from this conversation....
but why is it that when someone commits a crime now a days, it is never their fault?
It's always blamed on something else... mental deficientcies, poor childhood raising, etc.
