Well, after 45 minutes on the phone with Century Link, and 1 1/2 hours with Netgear, we got the modem working. But the router was not. He said for a small fee, he'd tell me how to make it work (its an ASUS). Small fee was $50-150 with a warranty. I said its new and has a two year warranty!! Wife came home and fixed it with her phone. Not sure what she did, but it all works!! Thanks everyone for the education.

You are almost right. VDSL2 allows for higher speeds at shorter distances. ADSL/ADSL2+ has farther reach but slower speeds. Also Centurylink has 2 VDSL2 modems, C1000A and the C1000Z. As far as I know, the C1000A is the only VDSL2 modem sold at stores like Best Buy and Walmart and they are the same price as you can get from Centurylink.

This depends on other factors... Like frequency band and interference. In the 8c band, vdsl2 download speeds are higher than adsl2+ at all distances unless there is interference present. (Works in the lab, anyway)
Admittedly, there is a distance where vdsl2 upload speed is too slow to be viable...
