I wish technology solved people issues. It seems to just reveal them.

Yeah, I was kind of at a loss for that little scene. The pointing it at her just didn't seem right. The only thing I could think of is they were trying to show that he was unarmed at the range that day because he laid the revolver up on that ledge in the wall as he left. I too was thinking maybe that was the kid's cap gun but it seemed to function too realistically for that.
I think it was meant to imply he had finally reached his cowboy roots, carrying his six gun rather than a military weapon. The changing into cowboy boots was a stage of this. In other words, he had come fully home.
It was a strange scene and didn't really fit the movie. Maybe it really happened that way. Even the best of us have periods of poor decision making in our lives.

Yeah, I got that part... Even took his son hunting and stuff like that. It was the whole pointing it at the wife that got me. Wondering if they specifically showed that action because that is what Taya remembered or if she just remembered him having that revolver and hollywood types that don't have any experience with guns just threw that in there and it wasn't vetted by the military folks since it was an at home scene?

Finally saw it today. Absolutely superb way to end the film. Since his wife said they nailed the movie, I suspect that's what actually happened. I wouldn't expect him to be casual with a cocked single-action, especially around his kids, so I guessed the gun was unloaded and he put it on the sill just as a precaution to keep it from getting cocked. Yes, yes, it violates the "all guns are loaded" precept but I'm sure Kyle felt he knew what he was doing.
