    Negligent discharge. Self-inflicted, unintentional.
I don't know where the GSW was, so given that he would have otherwise accessed the trunk from the outside, I'm assuming he was hit somewhere other than the head and was trying to access a medical kit.

    Interesting theory.

So would you also believe that he experienced the wound while accessing the back seat from outside the vehicle? And leaning in? Why else would the back seat door be opened? Perhaps he was collecting his firearm from the back seat?

And would most people hammer out 911 on their phone or start working on the physically demanding effort of gaining trunk access from inside their vehicle first? Accessing a trunk from the inside of a vehicle isn't an easy thing if you are debilitated. Perhaps his rear seat backs were already down?

Chances are good that the guy was just your run of the mill shooter. Would someone like that go for a medical kit first or try to find help?

If it was an ND, who knows what was going through the guys head with shock setting in.

It will be interesting to see what is discovered regarding this incident. This is a very strange and very sad incident.

May the sportsman rest in peace. And may we all be safe and careful.

Again, yes it was an ND.
I don't know why he was in the back seat, but it's the only explanation I can think of. I'm not positive what firearm it was, but chances are high that it was his carry gun which wouldn't have been kept in the trunk, so I don't know why else he'd want to access it in the first place let alone from the cabin.
I think it's possible he would have gone for a med kit prior to calling 911 depending on shot placement, but I could be wrong. Or maybe he left his phone in his range bag and that's what he was trying to get to.

is there a reason why you are so sure it was an ND? Are you connected to the store or have information beyond what the article reported?

Yes to all of it. And no.

Folks, I gave some insight into the events to dispel any rumours/speculation of suicide, homicide, or extreme (idiotic) negligence, as such things are unbecoming of one of the best men I've ever known.
At this point, on behalf of both the family and TFL, I ask that we refrain from further discussion about the incident.
    Thank you.
