I'm not positive what firearm it was, but chances are high that it was his carry gun which wouldn't have been kept in the trunk, so I don't know why else he'd want to access it in the first place let alone from the cabin.
I think it's possible he would have gone for a med kit prior to calling 911 depending on shot placement, but I could be wrong. Or maybe he left his phone in his range bag and that's what he was trying to get to.

is there a reason why you are so sure it was an ND? Are you connected to the store or have information beyond what the article reported?
